The Necklace Behind the Door / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10: The Stranger Who Knew Their Names

Marcus read the letter again.

Then again.

The words refused to change.

*“If you are reading this, Adrian found out the truth before I could stop him.””*

His fingers tightened around the paper.

“Maya.””

She looked up.

“Who gave you this?””

Nobody moved.

The question carried more weight than anger.

It carried fear.

Maya swallowed.

“I found it behind the panel in your office.””

Marcus looked toward the hallway.

“The same place where you found the necklace?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

Nia stepped forward.

“Maya, why didn’t you tell me?””

Maya looked at her mother.

“Because I thought you were part of it.””

The words hurt.

Nia closed her eyes.

“I understand.””

“No, you don’t.””

Maya’s voice cracked.

“I spent my whole life feeling like something was wrong, but nobody would tell me why.””

Jordan moved closer to her.

“You shouldn’t have had to carry that.””

Marcus looked at the letter.

“Who wrote this?””

Maya shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Detective Harris reached out.

“May I see it?””

Marcus handed it over.

The detective studied the handwriting.

“This isn’t from your father.””

“No.””

Marcus looked at the page.

“Then who?””

Harris turned the paper slightly.

“There’s a signature.””

Everyone leaned closer.

At the bottom of the letter were two words.

*Evelyn Cole.*

Marcus frowned.

“Cole.””

His expression changed.

“Adrian Cole.””

Renee nodded slowly.

“His mother.””

Maya looked confused.

“His mother wrote this?””

Renee’s face became serious.

“Yes.””

Marcus stared.

“Why would Adrian’s mother leave a letter in my office?””

Nobody answered.

Then Lily spoke.

“She knew Dad would find it.””

Everyone turned.

The little girl stood near the staircase.

Her voice was quiet.

“But she didn’t know when.””

Marcus walked toward her.

“Lily, why do you say that?””

She looked at the floor.

“Because I saw someone.””

Nia immediately became concerned.

“Someone where?””

“Outside.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“When?””

Lily hesitated.

“Before Maya found the necklace.””

The room went cold.

Marcus crouched.

“Lily, I need you to tell me exactly what you saw.””

She looked at him.

“A man was standing by the fence.””

“Did you see his face?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

Everyone waited.

“Was it Adrian?””

Lily looked at the photograph on the table.

Then slowly shook her head.

“No.””

Marcus frowned.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

She pointed at the picture.

“That man had a scar.””

Nobody spoke.

Detective Harris immediately looked at the photograph.

“Adrian doesn’t have a scar.””

Marcus stood.

“Then who was watching my house?””

The question hung there.

A new threat.

A new secret.

Renee looked toward the door.

“We need to leave.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

She grabbed her bag.

“This isn’t safe anymore.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“You walk into my house after sixteen years of silence, tell me my family is built on lies, and now you’re telling me to run?””

Renee looked at him.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her voice became softer.

“Because Adrian isn’t the only person who wants that necklace.””

A sudden sound came from outside.

Everyone froze.

A car door closing.

Marcus looked toward the window.

The driveway light flickered.

Someone was outside.

Detective Harris immediately moved toward the curtain.

“Stay back.””

He looked outside carefully.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

Marcus stepped forward.

“What do you see?””

Harris didn’t answer.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

“There’s someone at the gate.””

Marcus looked.

“Who?””

The detective stared at the screen.

“I don’t know.””

The security system notification appeared.

A new camera alert.

Motion detected.

Marcus grabbed his phone.

The home security footage loaded.

The camera showed the front gate.

A person standing there.

Black coat.

Face hidden.

Holding something.

Maya stepped closer.

“No…”

Marcus looked at her.

“You know them?””

She shook her head.

But her expression said otherwise.

The person outside lifted their hand.

And placed an object against the gate camera.

The footage zoomed in.

A necklace.

The same necklace.

Marcus’s heart dropped.

“That’s impossible.””

Because the necklace was still in his hand.

Then the stranger turned toward the camera.

And spoke.

The audio was faint.

But clear enough.

“I know what happened to the other child.””

Marcus froze.

The stranger walked away.

Leaving one final message on the camera.

A name.

Not Adrian.

Not Evelyn.

A name Marcus had never heard before.

But Maya recognized immediately.

May you like

And when she saw it appear on the screen, she whispered:

“That’s my real father.””
