The Necklace Behind the Door / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11: The Child Who Was Taken

Nobody moved.

The security footage remained frozen.

The name on the screen stared back at them.

*Caleb Rivers.*

Maya’s voice trembled.

“That’s him.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You know that name?””

She nodded slowly.

“I’ve seen it before.””

Nia’s face turned pale.

“Where?””

Maya looked at the necklace.

“On the back of the picture.””

Marcus picked up the photograph again.

He turned it over.

There, written faintly in old ink, was a name.

Caleb Rivers.

His stomach dropped.

“He was connected to this from the beginning.””

Renee nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You knew.””

“I knew his name.””

“You knew everything.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I knew pieces.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Everyone knows pieces.””

He looked around the room.

“And I’m the only person who lived the lie.””

The words silenced everyone.

Detective Harris walked back toward the table.

“Caleb Rivers has been missing for years.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You know him?””

Harris nodded.

“He was investigated after Maya’s birth.””

Maya’s face changed.

“Investigated for what?””

Harris looked uncomfortable.

“Questions about the hospital records.””

Nia whispered:

“Stop.””

Everyone looked at her.

She was crying.

“Please.””

Marcus stared.

“No.””

His voice was calm now.

“That’s what you’ve been saying for sixteen years.””

He pointed toward Maya.

“She deserves the truth.””

Maya looked at her mother.

“Please tell me.””

Nia sat down slowly.

Her hands shook.

“When I met Caleb, I was young.””

Marcus listened.

“I thought he loved me.””

She looked at Maya.

“When I found out I was pregnant, he wanted us to leave.””

“Why?””

Nia swallowed.

“Because his family had money. Power. Connections.””

Renee nodded.

“The Cole family.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What do they have to do with Caleb?””

Renee answered.

“Everything.””

She walked toward the table.

“Caleb and Adrian were connected.””

Maya frowned.

“How?””

Renee looked at her.

“They were brothers.””

The room went silent.

Marcus stared.

“Brothers?””

“Yes.””

Detective Harris flipped through his notes.

“That explains why the records were altered.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Explain.””

“Two families. Two children. Two identities.””

Maya stepped backward.

“No.””

Jordan caught her arm.

“Maya.””

She shook her head.

“No, this is too much.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

She looked at him.

“For what?””

He struggled to answer.

“For not knowing.””

The sentence broke her.

Because for the first time, Marcus wasn’t pretending he had all the answers.

He was just a father trying to find them.

Maya wiped her tears.

“Then who was the other child?””

Nobody answered.

The question everyone feared.

Detective Harris looked down.

“I believe that’s why Caleb came back.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

Harris showed him another document.

“A birth record.””

Marcus looked.

Then stopped.

The name was there.

The second child.

The child who disappeared.

The child connected to all the lies.

Marcus whispered:

“No.””

Maya stepped closer.

“Dad?””

He looked up.

His face was full of shock.

Because the record showed something impossible.

The second child wasn’t a stranger.

It wasn’t someone far away.

It was someone standing in their living room.

Marcus slowly looked toward Lily.

And the world seemed to stop.
