The Necklace Behind the Door / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6: The Letter Under the Necklace

The silence after the call felt heavier than the argument that started everything.

Marcus stood in the middle of the living room, holding the dead phone.

Nobody moved.

Nobody knew what to say.

Finally, Maya spoke.

“I didn’t want this.””

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Marcus looked at her.

“What did you want?””

She looked around the room.

“I wanted my family to stay together.””

Nia immediately started crying.

“Oh, Maya.””

But Maya stepped away.

“No.””

The word surprised everyone.

“I spent my whole life believing everyone was protecting me.””

She looked at Marcus.

“But maybe everyone was just protecting themselves.””

Marcus looked down.

The sentence hurt because he couldn’t deny it.

Jordan moved closer to her.

“Maya, you don’t have to do this alone.””

She looked at him.

“I blamed you.””

Jordan nodded.

“I know.””

“I lied about you.””

“I know.””

She swallowed.

“I’m sorry.””

Jordan looked at her for a moment.

Then quietly said:

“I know you were scared.””

Marcus watched the exchange.

The anger in him was still there.

But underneath it was something worse.

Confusion.

He turned to Nia.

“Where is the necklace?””

Nia hesitated.

“Maya has it.””

Everyone looked at Maya.

She slowly reached into the pocket of her hoodie.

The small dark pouch appeared.

The same pouch from the security footage.

Marcus stared.

“That’s what you gave Jordan?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

Maya looked at the floor.

“Because I thought you would destroy everything.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why would I do that?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because the letter was about you.””

The words hit him.

“What does that mean?””

Maya opened the pouch.

Inside was the necklace.

The room became quiet.

It looked ordinary.

A simple piece of jewelry.

But everyone reacted like it carried a storm inside it.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Give it to me.””

Maya didn’t move.

“Dad…”

“Give it to me.””

Slowly, she handed it over.

Marcus held the necklace carefully.

He turned it over.

Looking for something.

Anything.

Renee walked closer.

“There’s a hidden compartment.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“And you still let me believe it was just jewelry?””

Renee looked away.

“I thought it was safer.””

“For who?””

She didn’t answer.

Marcus examined the necklace.

Then he found it.

A tiny opening.

His fingers stopped.

Nia whispered:

“Marcus…”

He looked at his wife.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“Maybe you shouldn’t.””

His expression changed.

“After everything tonight, you’re still telling me what I should know?””

Nia cried.

“I’m telling you because I love you.””

Marcus opened the compartment.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

Old.

Carefully hidden.

The letter.

Everyone watched.

Marcus unfolded it.

The first line was visible.

His face changed instantly.

Maya noticed.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he whispered:

“No.””

Nia covered her mouth.

Marcus looked up.

And the person standing in front of him suddenly looked like a stranger.

“What did you do?””

Nia froze.

“I didn’t—”

Marcus held up the letter.

His hands were shaking.

“Sixteen years.””

His voice cracked.

“Sixteen years you let me believe something that wasn’t true.””

Maya looked between them.

“Dad, what does it say?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He kept staring at the letter.

Because the name written at the bottom wasn’t Renee’s.

It wasn’t David’s.

It was his.

May you like

And underneath his name was a sentence that made his entire world collapse:

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way, Marcus… but Maya is not the only child you were lied about.””
