The Necklace Behind the Door / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4: The Person at the Door

The door handle moved slowly.

Nobody breathed.

Marcus stood in front of the living room, his body tense, one hand slightly raised as if he could stop whatever was waiting outside through sheer will.

Behind him, Maya looked frozen.

Not scared like before.

Different.

Like she had been waiting for this moment but praying it would never come.

Nia noticed.

“Maya,” she whispered.

“Who is it?””

Maya didn’t answer.

Jordan looked at her.

“You know.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Jordan’s expression changed.

“Yes, you do.””

The lock clicked.

Marcus turned sharply toward the door.

“Everybody stay back.””

The door opened.

A woman stood on the other side.

She was Black, probably in her early fifties, wearing a gray coat and holding a small handbag close to her chest. Her eyes immediately moved across the room.

First to Marcus.

Then Nia.

Then Maya.

When she saw Maya, her face fell.

“Maya.””

The teenager covered her mouth.

The woman stepped inside.

“Maya, I need to talk to you.””

Marcus blocked her path.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked at him.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then she quietly said:

“My name is Renee.””

Nia’s face changed.

She recognized the name.

“Maya…”

Marcus looked at his wife.

“You know her?””

Nia didn’t answer.

That silence said enough.

Marcus turned back.

“Why is someone I’ve never seen walking into my house asking for my daughter?””

Renee looked down.

“Because she’s my daughter too.””

The room stopped.

Maya’s eyes widened.

Jordan stepped backward.

Lily looked between the adults, confused.

Marcus stared.

“What did you just say?””

Renee’s voice shook.

“I didn’t want it to happen like this.””

Marcus laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“No.””

He looked at Nia.

“No, explain.””

Nia’s eyes filled with tears.

“Marcus…”

“Explain.””

The word came out heavier.

Maya backed away.

“Mom…”

Nia looked at her daughter.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

Marcus’s voice cracked slightly.

“After sixteen years?””

Renee lowered her eyes.

“I never wanted to hurt her.””

Marcus looked at Maya.

The girl who had been standing in front of him moments ago accusing Jordan.

The girl who had hidden something.

The girl who looked terrified.

Now he understood why.

But not enough.

Not nearly enough.

“Why is she here now?””

Renee looked at Maya.

“Because I found out she had something that belonged to me.””

Everyone became still.

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“The pouch.””

Maya looked down.

Renee nodded.

“Yes.””

Jordan whispered:

“So that’s what this was about.””

Marcus turned toward him.

“You knew?””

Jordan shook his head.

“I knew she was hiding something. I didn’t know who it belonged to.””

Maya wiped her face.

“I was trying to protect everyone.””

Marcus looked at her.

“By lying?””

She flinched.

“I was scared.””

“Scared of what?””

Maya didn’t answer.

Renee stepped forward.

“Because she knows the truth.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What truth?””

Renee took a deep breath.

“The necklace wasn’t just a necklace.””

Nia closed her eyes.

“Maya…”

Marcus looked at his wife.

“You knew?””

Nia’s silence confirmed it.

The betrayal hit him harder than the secret itself.

“You both knew.””

Nia started crying.

“I was trying to protect Maya.””

“From me?””

“No.””

“Then from what?””

Nobody answered.

The room became filled with everything people had avoided saying.

Marcus looked at the security footage still open on his phone.

Maya handing Jordan the pouch.

Jordan hiding it.

Everyone protecting something.

Everyone except him.

He looked at Maya.

“Where is the necklace?””

Maya whispered:

“I don’t know.””

Marcus didn’t believe her.

But before he could respond, Renee spoke.

“She knows.””

Maya looked at her.

“Stop.””

Renee’s expression softened.

“You can’t keep carrying this alone.””

Maya’s face broke.

“You don’t get to say that.””

The words shocked everyone.

Renee looked hurt.

Maya stepped forward.

“You left.””

The room went silent.

“You left me, and now you show up when everything is falling apart?””

Renee’s eyes filled with tears.

“I left because I was trying to save you.””

Maya laughed bitterly.

“Save me from what?””

Renee looked at Marcus.

Then at Nia.

Then back at Maya.

“From the truth about your father.””

Marcus went completely still.

“What did you say?””

Renee opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

“No…”

Marcus noticed.

“Who is calling?””

Renee slowly lowered the phone.

May you like

And whispered:

“The person who knows where the necklace really is.””
