Chapter 5: The Name Nobody Expected
Nobody moved.
Renee’s phone continued ringing.
The sound echoed through the living room.
Marcus stared at the screen.
“Answer it.””
Renee hesitated.
“Marcus—”
“Answer it.””
Her hand shook as she accepted the call.
She pressed speaker.
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a man’s voice came through.
“Is she there?””
Marcus looked around.
Everyone looked confused.
Renee closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The voice became quieter.
“And Marcus?””
Nobody spoke.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“You don’t recognize my voice?””
Marcus froze.
Something about the voice reached into a memory he didn’t want to open.
Nia covered her mouth.
“Marcus…”
He looked at her.
“You know who this is.””
She didn’t answer.
The man on the phone laughed softly.
“I guess sixteen years changes people.””
Marcus’s face hardened.
“Say your name.””
The voice paused.
Then:
“David.””
Maya gasped.
Jordan looked at her.
“Who’s David?””
Nobody answered.
Marcus’s grip tightened around his phone.
David continued.
“The necklace was never stolen.””
Marcus stared.
“Where is it?””
“You’re asking the wrong question.””
“Then what’s the right question?””
A long silence.
Then David said:
“Why did Renee leave?””
Maya looked at Renee.
Nia looked terrified.
Marcus’s expression changed.
“This is about the necklace.””
“No.””
David’s voice was calm.
“It’s about what was hidden inside it.””
The room went silent.
Marcus looked at Maya.
The pouch.
The necklace.
The secret.
Everything connected.
“What was inside?””
David didn’t answer.
Instead, he said:
“Ask your wife.””
Nia stepped backward.
“No.””
Marcus turned.
“Nia?””
She shook her head.
“Don’t do this.””
Marcus stared.
“You knew.””
Nia’s eyes filled with tears.
“I knew some of it.””
“Some?””
The anger in his voice made Lily move closer to the staircase.
Nia looked down.
“Maya was only a baby.””
Marcus’s face softened for a second.
Then hardened again.
“That doesn’t explain why everyone has been lying to me.””
Maya walked toward him.
“Dad.””
He looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
The apology sounded small.
Too small for the weight of everything.
Marcus looked at the phone.
“David, where is the necklace?””
David sighed.
“You’re still trying to protect the wrong person.””
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Maya didn’t hide that pouch because she stole something.””
David paused.
“She hid it because she found something.””
Everyone stared at Maya.
Maya’s face turned pale.
Marcus looked at her.
“You found something?””
She looked away.
Jordan whispered:
“Maya…”
Marcus’s voice dropped.
“Tell me.””
Maya’s hands trembled.
“I found it in Mom’s old things.””
Nia closed her eyes.
“Maya, please.””
“No.””
Maya wiped her tears.
“I’m done lying.””
She looked at Marcus.
“The necklace had something hidden inside.””
Marcus stared.
“What?””
Maya swallowed.
“A picture.””
Nobody expected that answer.
Marcus frowned.
“A picture?””
Maya nodded.
“And a letter.””
Renee looked at her.
“You opened it?””
Maya looked at her.
“I had to know why everyone was acting like it was dangerous.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“What did the letter say?””
Maya’s lips parted.
Before she could answer, David spoke through the phone.
“Don’t tell him.””
Everyone froze.
Marcus picked up the phone.
“Why?””
David’s voice became serious.
“Because if Marcus knows what’s in that letter…”
A pause.
“…he’ll realize the biggest lie was never about Maya.””
The call suddenly ended.
The screen went black.
Marcus stood in silence.
Then slowly looked at his family.
May you like
The people he trusted most.
And for the first time, he wondered if the life he had built was based on a truth that never existed.
