Chapter 9: The Man Behind the Secret

Marcus stared at the photograph.

The pouch.

The necklace.

The man outside their home.

Everything connected.

But none of it made sense.

He looked at Nia.

“You told me Maya’s father was gone.””

Nia’s eyes filled with tears.

“I thought he was.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“You thought?””

She looked down.

“I was young.””

“You were young sixteen years ago.””

Her silence hurt.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Nia looked at Maya.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Nia swallowed.

“That he would come back.””

The answer changed everything.

Maya stepped forward.

“Mom.””

Nia looked at her.

“I never wanted you to know.””

Maya shook her head.

“But I deserved to.””

“Yes.””

Nia started crying.

“You did.””

Marcus looked away.

The room was filled with too many truths arriving too quickly.

Detective Harris closed the folder.

“I should let your family talk.””

Marcus stopped him.

“No.””

Harris looked back.

“I need answers.””

The detective nodded.

“Then you need to know one more thing.””

Marcus waited.

“The man in the photograph contacted me before he disappeared.””

Maya looked confused.

“Disappeared?””

Harris nodded.

“He left behind one message.””

“What message?””

The detective looked at the necklace.

“He said the necklace was never meant to be found by Maya.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus looked at the jewelry in his hand.

“Then who was it meant for?””

Harris didn’t answer.

Instead, he pulled out his phone.

“I received this tonight.””

He played an audio recording.

A man’s voice filled the room.

Older.

Tired.

But clear.

“If Marcus has the necklace, then the truth is already coming out.””

Maya grabbed Jordan’s arm.

The voice continued.

“But there’s something Marcus needs to know.””

The recording paused.

Everyone waited.

Then the man said:

“The child he raised was never the child he was supposed to have.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

The words cut deeper than anything before.

Nia whispered:

“No.””

The recording continued.

“And the person who changed that was someone Marcus trusted completely.””

The audio ended.

Nobody spoke.

Marcus looked around the room.

At Nia.

At Renee.

At Jordan.

At Lily.

At Maya.

Someone had betrayed him.

Someone close.

Someone who knew his family.

He turned to Detective Harris.

“Find him.””

The detective nodded.

“We’re already trying.””

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

“Who is he?””

Harris hesitated.

Then answered.

“His name is Adrian Cole.””

Maya’s face changed.

She knew that name.

Jordan noticed.

“Maya?””

She looked terrified.

“I’ve heard that name before.””

Marcus turned.

“From where?””

Maya looked toward the hallway.

Toward the place where she found the hidden compartment.

“I saw it.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Where?””

“On the letter.””

Everyone froze.

“What letter?””

Maya’s voice shook.

“The one I didn’t show you.””

Nia’s face went pale.

“Maya…”

She reached into her hoodie pocket.

And pulled out another folded piece of paper.

Marcus stared.

“You had another letter?””

Maya nodded.

“I didn’t know what it meant.””

She handed it to him.

Marcus opened it.

The handwriting wasn’t his father’s this time.

It was newer.

Different.

The first line was enough to make him stop breathing.

*“If you are reading this, Adrian found out the truth before I could stop him.””*

Marcus looked up.

Maya was crying.

Because she finally understood.

The secret wasn’t buried in the past.

May you like

It was still alive.

And someone had been watching their family the entire time.
