Chapter 13: The Father’s Last Secret

Marcus stared at the photograph on his phone.

His father.

Standing outside a hospital.

Alive.

The day after his funeral.

The world around him seemed to disappear.

The voices.

The questions.

The fear.

Everything became distant.

“No.””

The word escaped his mouth before he could stop it.

Nia stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He handed her the phone.

Her face changed instantly.

“Oh my God.””

Maya looked over.

“What?””

Marcus took the phone back.

“Nobody touches anything.””

Detective Harris moved closer.

“Let me see.””

Marcus showed him.

The detective studied the image carefully.

Then his expression changed.

“This photo is real.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Harris pointed at the timestamp.

“The metadata matches the original file.””

Marcus stared.

His father had been alive.

After everyone thought he was gone.

Renee whispered:

“Evelyn was right.””

Marcus turned.

“About what?””

“She said your father knew the truth before anyone.””

Marcus shook his head.

“My father was sick.””

“Yes.””

“He couldn’t walk.””

“Yes.””

“He was in the hospital.””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked frustrated.

“Then how was he here?””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

Then Lily quietly spoke.

“Maybe he didn’t disappear.””

Everyone looked at her.

Marcus softened.

“Lily?””

She pointed at the photo.

“Maybe he wanted people to think he disappeared.””

The room went silent.

Detective Harris slowly nodded.

“That’s possible.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You think my father faked his own death?””

“I think someone wanted him gone.””

Marcus looked back at the photo.

His father standing beside Caleb Rivers.

The same man who had been connected to Maya’s secret.

“What were they doing together?””

Renee walked toward the table.

“There’s something you need to know.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What now?””

She reached into her handbag.

She pulled out an old envelope.

“I was saving this.””

Marcus stared.

“You had another letter?””

Renee shook her head.

“No.””

She handed it to him.

“Your father gave this to me.””

Marcus froze.

“When?””

“Three days before he died.””

Nia looked shocked.

“You never told me.””

Renee looked at her.

“Because he told me not to.””

Marcus opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

His father’s handwriting.

Again.

Marcus read.

*Marcus, if you are reading this, then I failed to protect you from the truth.*

His hands tightened.

*I spent years believing I could control the damage. I was wrong.*

He kept reading.

*The children were never the problem. The adults were.*

Marcus swallowed.

*Maya and Lily are innocent. They were born into a fight they never chose.*

His eyes filled.

*The person who changed the records was not Caleb. It was someone closer. Someone who believed they were saving everyone.*

Marcus stopped.

Everyone waited.

“Who?””

The letter continued.

*I cannot write the name because if this letter is found, that person will know I betrayed them.*

Marcus looked up.

“That’s all?””

Renee shook her head.

“There was another page.””

“Where is it?””

Her face changed.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus stared.

“You lost it?””

“No.””

Her voice became quiet.

“Someone took it.””

The room fell silent.

“Who?””

Renee looked toward the window.

“I think the same person who has been watching this house.””

A sudden sound interrupted them.

A crash.

Everyone turned.

The back door.

Marcus immediately moved.

“Stay here.””

Detective Harris followed.

They walked carefully through the hallway.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

Marcus reached the kitchen.

The back door was open.

Cold air entered the room.

On the floor was a small object.

A flash drive.

Marcus picked it up.

There was a note attached.

Three words.

*Watch the truth.*

Detective Harris looked at him.

“Don’t open that here.””

Marcus stared at the flash drive.

“I’m done waiting.””

He brought it back into the living room.

Everyone gathered.

He connected it to the television.

A video appeared.

A man sat in a dark room.

Older.

Tired.

Marcus recognized him immediately.

His father.

Everyone gasped.

The recording began.

“Marcus.””

His father looked directly into the camera.

“If you’re seeing this, then the person I feared has finally forced the truth into the open.””

Marcus couldn’t breathe.

His father continued.

“I need you to understand something.””

The old man looked emotional.

“I did not lose your family’s truth.””

A pause.

“I buried it.””

Marcus leaned closer.

His father whispered:

“And the person who helped me hide it…”

The screen flickered.

The video distorted.

Then his father said one final sentence.

“The person who changed the hospital records was your own wife.””

The screen went black.

Nobody moved.

Marcus slowly turned toward Nia.

And for the first time in sixteen years…

He didn’t know who he was looking at.
