Chapter 14: The Choice Between Two Families

The television remained black.

But nobody looked away.

Marcus stared at Nia.

She looked broken.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Broken.

“Maya.””

Her voice trembled.

“I can explain.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

The word was quiet.

But final.

“I need the truth.””

Nia covered her mouth.

“I was going to tell you.””

“You always say that.””

The pain in his voice made her cry harder.

“I was afraid.””

“Afraid enough to let me raise children without knowing?””

Nia looked toward Lily.

“No.””

“Then what?””

She took a shaky breath.

“Afraid enough to lose all of you.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Explain.””

Nia sat down.

For the first time that night, she looked exhausted.

“Sixteen years ago, when Maya was born, Caleb came back.””

Maya froze.

“He came to the hospital?””

Nia nodded.

“He wanted to take her.””

Marcus’s face tightened.

“But you said he disappeared.””

“He did.””

Nia looked at Renee.

“But not before he threatened us.””

Renee nodded.

“He threatened everyone connected to the children.””

Marcus looked at Detective Harris.

“And my father?””

Harris answered.

“Your father found out.””

Nia continued.

“He told me he could protect Maya.””

Marcus looked at her.

“How?””

“He said there was a way to make Caleb stop.””

Maya whispered:

“By changing the records.””

Nia closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

Silence.

Marcus looked devastated.

“You switched the identities.””

“No.””

Nia looked at him.

“I didn’t switch them.””

She looked at Lily.

“The hospital records were already changed before I knew.””

Everyone stopped.

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

Nia nodded.

“Your father found out someone had altered the documents.””

Detective Harris looked surprised.

“Then why did the video say Nia did it?””

Nia looked at the television.

“Because I helped hide the truth afterward.””

Marcus stared.

The difference mattered.

But it still hurt.

“What did you hide?””

Nia looked at Maya.

“The fact that Caleb had another child.””

Lily’s eyes widened.

Marcus looked at her.

“You knew?””

Nia cried.

“I knew there was a second baby.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I thought protecting Lily meant protecting you.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You don’t get to decide that alone.””

Nia lowered her head.

“I know.””

Maya stood quietly.

Everyone looked at her.

“I think I understand.””

Marcus turned.

“Maya?””

She looked at him.

“Everyone was trying to protect someone.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But nobody protected us from the truth.””

The sentence silenced the room.

Marcus looked at his daughter.

The girl who had been carrying a secret she was never supposed to carry.

He walked toward her.

“I’m sorry.””

Maya cried.

“For what?””

“For not seeing how scared you were.””

She hugged him.

And for the first time that night, father and daughter stopped fighting the truth.

They faced it together.

Then Detective Harris’s phone rang.

He answered.

A few seconds later, his expression changed.

“What?””

Marcus noticed.

“What happened?””

Harris ended the call.

“We found Caleb Rivers.””

Everyone froze.

“Where?””

The detective looked at Maya.

“He’s been nearby.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Nearby where?””

Harris hesitated.

Then:

“Your father’s old property.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“My father’s house?””

“Yes.””

Renee whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

She looked terrified.

“Because Caleb was the person your father was trying to hide from.””

Marcus grabbed his jacket.

“Then why would he go there?””

Nobody answered.

They didn’t need to.

Everyone understood.

Caleb wasn’t hiding.

He was waiting.

Before Marcus could leave, Maya grabbed his arm.

“Dad.””

He looked at her.

“Don’t go alone.””

Marcus looked at his family.

At Maya.

At Lily.

At Jordan.

At Nia.

Sixteen years of secrets had almost destroyed them.

But now they stood together.

He nodded.

“We go together.””

Detective Harris looked concerned.

“This could be dangerous.””

Marcus looked at him.

“So was living a lie.””

The family walked toward the door.

But before they left, Marcus looked back at the television.

The screen was still black.

Except one thing had appeared.

A new message.

Nobody had typed it.

Nobody had touched the computer.

May you like

Only three words.

*He knows everything.*
