The Necklace Behind the Door / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7: The Truth Written in Ink

The letter shook in Marcus’s hand.

Not because it was old.

Not because of the secrets hidden inside the necklace.

Because of the words staring back at him.

“Maya is not the only child you were lied about.””

Nobody spoke.

The sentence had changed the room.

Marcus looked at Nia.

Then at Maya.

Then at Lily standing quietly near the staircase.

His eyes stopped there.

A horrible thought entered his mind.

And he hated himself for thinking it.

Lily noticed his expression.

“Dad?””

The fear in her voice broke something inside him.

Marcus immediately looked away.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“No, that’s not what this means.””

But nobody believed him.

Not even himself.

Nia stepped forward.

“Marcus, listen to me.””

He held up the letter.

“No.””

His voice was low.

“Not another explanation. Not another secret.””

Tears rolled down Nia’s face.

“I never wanted you hurt.””

“You keep saying that.””

Marcus looked at her.

“But somehow I’m always the last person to know.””

Renee stood silently near the doorway.

She looked older suddenly.

Tired.

Like she had carried this secret for years.

“Marcus,” she said softly.

He turned.

“What?””

“The letter wasn’t written by me.””

“Then who wrote it?””

Renee hesitated.

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

She looked at the paper.

“Your father.””

The room went silent.

Marcus froze.

“My father?””

Renee nodded.

“He knew.””

Marcus stared.

“My father died twelve years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then how could he know?””

Renee looked at Nia.

And Nia looked down.

That answer hurt more than any words.

Marcus slowly turned.

“Nia?””

She couldn’t look at him.

“You knew about the letter?””

Nia whispered:

“I knew your father left something behind.””

Marcus stepped back.

“You knew.””

“I didn’t know what it said.””

“But you knew.””

Nia closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The confession landed like a punch.

Maya watched her parents.

The people she had always believed were unbreakable.

Now they looked like strangers.

Marcus looked back at the letter.

“What did my father know?””

Nobody answered.

He unfolded the paper farther.

The handwriting was shaky but familiar.

His father’s handwriting.

The same handwriting from birthday cards and old notes he had saved for years.

Marcus read silently.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

Maya stepped closer.

“Dad?””

Marcus looked at her.

“He knew about you.””

The words made her stop.

“He knew about me?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“He wrote that he found out something before he died.””

Renee whispered:

“He was trying to fix what happened.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Fix what?””

Renee swallowed.

“The truth about your family.””

Nobody moved.

Marcus looked at Maya.

“What does this have to do with you?””

Maya shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

But Jordan noticed something.

“Maya.””

She looked at him.

“You do know.””

Her face tightened.

Jordan pointed at the letter.

“You knew something was coming.””

Maya looked away.

Marcus immediately noticed.

“What is he talking about?””

Maya’s silence answered.

“Maya.””

She wiped her face.

“I found more than the letter.””

Everyone froze.

“What else?””

She looked toward the staircase.

“Something else was hidden.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“Where?””

Maya hesitated.

“Dad…”

“Where?””

She swallowed.

“In the wall.””

Nia gasped.

Jordan looked shocked.

“You never told me that.””

“I was scared.””

Marcus looked around the room.

“The wall where?””

Maya’s voice became smaller.

“Your office.””

Marcus went completely still.

“My office?””

She nodded.

“The night I found the necklace, I found a loose panel behind your bookshelf.””

Marcus looked at Nia.

“You knew?””

“No.””

Nia shook her head quickly.

“I swear.””

Marcus looked back at Maya.

“What was inside?””

Maya’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t open everything.””

“Why?””

“Because I saw your name.””

Marcus stared.

“And?””

Maya looked at him.

“Then I saw another name.””

The room became silent.

“What name?””

Maya opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, the front door suddenly opened again.

Everyone turned.

A man stood outside.

Older.

Gray hair.

Holding a folder.

Marcus’s face changed instantly.

Because he recognized him.

“Detective Harris?””

The man looked into the room.

His expression was serious.

“I’m sorry to come this late.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“What are you doing here?””

Detective Harris looked at the necklace.

Then at the letter.

Then at Maya.

“I came because someone contacted me tonight.””

Marcus frowned.

“Who?””

Harris opened the folder.

“A person who wanted the truth exposed before it was too late.””

He pulled out a photograph.

And when Marcus saw the picture, all the color disappeared from his face.

Because standing beside him in the photograph was someone who should have never been there.
