Chapter 3: The Secret in the Pouch
The phone screen remained frozen in Marcus’s hand.
The words from the recording hung in the air.
“Hide this before Dad finds out.””
Nobody knew what to say.
The bright living room that had always been filled with laughter and family conversations now felt unfamiliar.
Marcus slowly looked at Maya.
Not with anger.
That would have been easier.
He looked hurt.
“Maya.””
She lowered her eyes.
“Dad…”
“Look at me.””
She didn’t.
Marcus took a breath.
“Look at me.””
Slowly, she raised her face.
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
The question was quiet.
But it cut deeper than shouting.
Maya looked away.
“I don’t know.””
Jordan stepped forward.
“Marcus, this isn’t just her fault.””
Marcus turned.
“Then whose fault is it?””
Jordan hesitated.
Maya immediately shook her head.
“Don’t.””
Jordan looked at her.
“You can’t keep doing this.””
Nia looked confused.
“Doing what?””
Nobody answered.
Marcus noticed.
That was the part that scared him most.
Not the necklace.
Not the missing item.
The way everyone seemed to know a piece of the story except him.
He turned to Jordan.
“You were protecting her.””
Jordan nodded slightly.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Jordan looked at Maya.
Then at Marcus.
“Because she was scared.””
Maya’s voice broke.
“Jordan.””
“No.””
Jordan’s expression hardened.
“I’m done lying for you.””
The room went silent again.
Marcus looked at Maya.
“What were you scared of?””
Maya squeezed her fists.
“I thought you’d hate me.””
Nia immediately stepped closer.
“Oh, baby…”
But Maya backed away.
“No. You don’t understand.””
Marcus’s eyes stayed fixed on her.
“Then help me understand.””
The security footage still showed the moment Maya handed over the pouch.
A tiny object.
A huge secret.
Marcus looked at the screen again.
“Where is the bag now?””
Jordan’s face changed.
Maya noticed.
“Jordan.””
Marcus saw the reaction.
“Where is it?””
Jordan looked down.
“I don’t have it anymore.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“What does that mean?””
Jordan rubbed his forehead.
“I hid it where she told me.””
“Where?””
Jordan didn’t answer.
Marcus’s voice became firmer.
“Jordan.””
The boy finally looked up.
“In the house.””
Nia froze.
“The house?””
Jordan nodded.
Marcus looked around the room.
Suddenly every corner felt different.
Every picture.
Every hallway.
Every locked drawer.
A secret could be anywhere.
Lily quietly spoke.
“I saw something.””
Everyone turned.
Marcus softened.
“Lily, what did you see?””
She hugged herself.
“Yesterday.””
Maya’s face changed.
“Lily…”
The little girl looked nervous.
“I saw Maya crying in the hallway.””
Marcus looked at Maya.
“And?””
Lily swallowed.
“She said she didn’t want Dad to know.””
Maya closed her eyes.
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“Maya, what did you find?””
The question landed harder than anything before.
Maya looked at her family.
At her mother.
At Jordan.
At Lily.
Then finally at Marcus.
Her lips moved.
But no sound came out.
A knock suddenly echoed through the front door.
Everyone turned.
Nobody had been expecting anyone.
Marcus slowly looked toward the entrance.
The room fell silent.
Another knock.
Stronger this time.
Maya’s face went completely pale.
Because she recognized the sound.
She knew who was standing outside.
Marcus noticed her reaction.
And before opening the door, he asked one final question.
“Maya… who is that?””
She stared at the door.
Then whispered a name.
May you like
But the moment before the words fully left her mouth—
The door handle began to turn.
