Chapter 10: The Woman Who Held the Final Piece

Maya couldn’t move.

The woman outside stood completely still, holding the folder against her chest as if she had been waiting years for this exact moment.

The words on the cover were impossible to ignore.

Safe Deposit Box 317.

Marcus stepped away from the window.

“Everyone stay inside.””

Maya looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because we don’t know who she is.””

Lorraine shook her head slowly.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

Lorraine stared through the glass.

“She’s not here to hurt us.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You know her?””

Lorraine’s expression was complicated.

“I know who she was.””

Maya felt frustration building again.

“Can someone please stop speaking like they’re in the middle of a secret conversation?””

Nobody answered.

She walked toward the front door.

Marcus immediately blocked her.

“Maya.””

“No.””

Her voice was firm.

“I’m done standing behind people while they decide what I’m allowed to know.””

She looked at Vanessa.

“My mother left this for me.””

Then at Marcus.

“She trusted me.””

Finally, she looked at Lorraine.

“And somehow every person here knows a piece of the story except me.””

Marcus lowered his arm.

He knew she was right.

Maya opened the door.

The woman outside looked at her and smiled sadly.

“You look exactly like her.””

Maya’s heart tightened.

“Who are you?””

The woman glanced toward the house.

“I think everyone inside knows that answer.””

Maya stepped aside.

The woman walked into the yard.

Her eyes immediately found the necklace.

“I wondered if you would ever find it.””

Maya held it protectively.

“How do you know about this?””

The woman looked at the necklace.

“Because I helped your mother hide it.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Your name.””

The woman looked at him.

“Dr. Evelyn Carter.””

Marcus frowned.

The name meant nothing to him.

But Vanessa reacted.

Her face changed instantly.

“No.””

Evelyn looked at Vanessa.

“Yes.””

Maya noticed.

“You know her.””

Vanessa whispered:

“She was my mother’s doctor.””

The yard went silent.

Maya looked at Evelyn.

“My mother’s doctor?””

Evelyn nodded.

“I treated your mother during the last months of her life.””

Marcus looked confused.

“That doesn’t make sense. She never told me about you.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“She couldn’t.””

“Why?””

Evelyn opened the folder.

“Because someone was monitoring her medical records.””

Maya felt cold.

“Why?””

Evelyn pulled out a document.

“Because your mother wasn’t sick in the way everyone thought.””

Marcus stared.

“What are you saying?””

Evelyn looked at Maya.

“Your mother discovered she was being poisoned.””

Nobody spoke.

The world seemed to stop.

Maya felt her knees weaken.

“No.””

Evelyn’s eyes softened.

“I’m sorry.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No. That’s impossible.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“You loved her.””

His face broke slightly.

“But you didn’t know everything happening around her.””

Maya looked at Vanessa.

“You knew?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I knew she was scared.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.””

Maya stepped back.

“You knew my mother was being poisoned?””

“I suspected.””

“You suspected?””

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“She begged me not to tell you.””

Maya stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because you were eighteen.””

“That was two years ago.””

“I know.””

Maya felt betrayed.

Everyone had been protecting her from a truth she had a right to know.

Evelyn opened another document.

“Your mother left instructions.””

Marcus looked at the paper.

“For the box?””

Evelyn nodded.

“She knew the necklace would eventually be found.””

Maya touched the chain.

“What instructions?””

Evelyn looked at her.

“The box can only be opened when all three pieces are together.””

Marcus frowned.

“Three pieces?””

Evelyn nodded.

“The necklace.””

“The key,” Maya said.

Evelyn nodded.

“And the final piece.””

Maya looked at the folder.

“What is the final piece?””

Evelyn slowly pulled out a small envelope.

The paper looked old.

Worn.

Like it had been held many times.

“This.””

Maya stared.

“My mother wrote that?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you give it to me before?””

Evelyn looked away.

“Because I was afraid.””

Maya almost smiled.

“Everyone was.””

Evelyn accepted the criticism.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What changed?””

Evelyn looked toward the street.

“Someone tried to open the box yesterday.””

Everyone froze.

Maya remembered the bank call.

“Daniel.””

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“Yes.””

“You know him?””

Evelyn nodded.

“He was the person your mother was investigating.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Then why was he in the photograph with her?””

Evelyn looked at Maya.

“Because your mother was trying to get close to him.””

Maya felt confused.

“She trusted him?””

“No.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“She studied him.””

The envelope in Evelyn’s hand suddenly felt heavier.

Maya reached for it.

Before she could open it, Evelyn stopped her.

“Your mother wrote one warning.””

“What?””

Evelyn looked at her.

“Do not read this until you know who is standing beside you.””

Maya looked around.

At Marcus.

At Vanessa.

At Brielle.

At Lorraine.

The words felt like a weapon.

Because now Maya understood.

May you like

The danger wasn’t only outside the family.

It was inside.
