Chapter 12: The Truth They Buried
The bank manager immediately locked the private room.
The sudden movement made everyone panic.
“What’s happening?”” Maya asked.
“Security protocol,” he said.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Someone photographed us inside a restricted area.””
The manager nodded.
“That should not be possible.””
Maya looked at the phone.
The image was still there.
A picture of her.
Her father.
Vanessa.
Everyone.
Taken from an angle that showed the entire room.
Someone had been close.
Too close.
Lorraine whispered:
“He knew.””
Maya looked at her.
“Who?””
Lorraine didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Everyone knew.
Daniel.
Marcus paced.
“We need to call the police.””
Vanessa suddenly said:
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
Marcus stared.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa looked afraid.
“If we involve the police, he disappears.””
“You’re protecting him?””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I’m telling you how dangerous he is.””
Maya looked at the journal.
“My mother knew.””
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.””
“She knew he was dangerous.””
“Yes.””
“Then why was she around him?””
Evelyn looked at the photograph.
“Because she needed proof.””
Maya touched the picture.
“Proof of what?””
Evelyn took a breath.
“The money theft.””
Marcus frowned.
“What money?””
“Your family’s company.””
Maya looked at him.
“My family’s?””
Marcus looked confused.
Evelyn nodded.
“Your mother discovered Daniel had been moving money through hidden accounts.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Daniel didn’t work for us.””
“No.””
Evelyn looked at Vanessa.
“He worked with someone who did.””
Everyone followed her gaze.
Vanessa went still.
Maya felt her stomach drop.
“No.””
Vanessa whispered:
“I didn’t.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Did you?””
Vanessa looked devastated.
“I made one mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“I trusted the wrong person.””
Maya looked at the photograph.
“You trusted Daniel.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Years ago.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at Brielle.
“Because he promised he could help us.””
“With what?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Medical bills.””
Brielle froze.
“My bills?””
Vanessa nodded.
“When you were sick as a child.””
Brielle covered her mouth.
“You never told me.””
“I didn’t want you to carry that.””
Maya felt the room shifting again.
Everyone was connected.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone had hidden something.
But one question remained.
Who poisoned her mother?
Maya picked up the journal.
“There has to be more.””
She flipped through the pages.
Most were memories.
Notes.
Dates.
Names.
Then she found something.
A page folded in half.
She opened it.
Her mother’s handwriting.
“‘The mistake was believing I could fix this alone.’”
Maya continued.
“‘I now know the person helping Daniel is closer than I thought.’”
Marcus stopped breathing.
Maya looked at the next line.
“‘I found the missing account records.’”
She turned the page.
Another sentence.
“‘The final proof is hidden where nobody would think to look.’”
Maya looked confused.
“Where?””
Nobody knew.
Then Brielle suddenly spoke.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
She looked at the photograph.
“The necklace.””
Maya looked at her.
“What about it?””
Brielle pointed.
“Your mother always wore it.””
“Yes.””
“But in that picture…”
She stepped closer.
“She isn’t wearing it.””
Maya looked.
Brielle was right.
The photograph showed her mother, Daniel, and Vanessa.
No necklace.
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Maya stared at the picture.
Then remembered.
Her mother had always worn the necklace.
Always.
Except that day.
“Someone had it.””
Evelyn nodded slowly.
“Exactly.””
Maya looked at the journal.
Her mother had hidden the key.
But the necklace itself had a history.
A missing piece.
A missing day.
A missing truth.
Then the bank door unlocked.
Everyone turned.
The manager entered.
His face was serious.
“I’m sorry.””
Marcus stood.
“What happened?””
The manager looked directly at Maya.
“There was another item registered to this box.””
Maya frowned.
“Another item?””
He nodded.
“A sealed letter.””
“Where is it?””
The manager hesitated.
“That’s the problem.””
Maya felt cold.
“What problem?””
The manager looked at the group.
“The letter was removed from the box two weeks ago.””
Everyone froze.
Marcus whispered:
“By who?””
The manager looked at the records.
Then answered:
“The person who had your mother’s authorization.””
Maya’s heart stopped.
“Who?””
The manager turned the screen around.
A name appeared.
A name that made Vanessa collapse into the chair.
May you like
Because it was the one name nobody expected.
*Maya Carter.*
