Chapter 9: The Truth Behind Her Disappearance
Nobody spoke after Maya read the note.
The sentence stayed on the page.
Helped me disappear.
Not killed me.
Not hurt me.
Not betrayed me.
Disappear.
Maya looked at her father.
“Dad.””
Marcus stared at the note.
“I don’t understand.””
Vanessa slowly sat down.
Her hands covered her face.
Brielle looked terrified.
“Maya…”
Maya turned.
“What?””
Brielle hesitated.
“I think my mom knows more than she’s saying.””
Vanessa lowered her hands.
“Brielle.””
“No.””
Brielle shook her head.
“I’m tired of not knowing anything.””
Maya looked at her.
For the first time, they weren’t stepsisters fighting over old belongings.
They were two daughters realizing they had both been kept in the dark.
Marcus picked up the note.
“This handwriting…”
“It’s hers,” Maya said.
He nodded.
“I know.””
“But she couldn’t have written this today.””
“No.””
Marcus looked toward the door.
“Someone delivered it.””
Maya looked at the envelope.
There was no address.
No return name.
Only her name.
“How did they know we found the necklace?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lorraine spoke.
“Because someone has been watching.””
Everyone looked at her.
Marcus frowned.
“You knew?””
Lorraine looked guilty.
“I suspected.””
Maya felt anger.
“Everyone suspects things.””
Her voice cracked.
“Everyone knows things.””
She looked around the room.
“And nobody tells me.””
The silence hurt.
Marcus looked down.
“You’re right.””
Maya wasn’t expecting that.
Her father continued.
“I spent twenty years thinking I was protecting you.””
He looked at her.
“I was protecting myself.””
Maya looked away.
She wanted to be angry.
But seeing her father break was harder.
Marcus stood.
“We’re going to the bank.””
Vanessa immediately said:
“No.””
Marcus turned.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because once you open that box, there is no going back.””
Maya stepped forward.
“There shouldn’t be.””
Vanessa stared at her.
“You don’t know what you’re asking for.””
Maya held up the necklace.
“My mother wanted me to know.””
Vanessa whispered:
“She wanted you safe.””
“She wanted me to know the truth.””
Vanessa looked at her.
And Maya saw tears in her eyes.
Real tears.
“I promised her.””
The room went still.
Marcus moved closer.
“Promised her what?””
Vanessa looked at the necklace.
“She made me promise I would protect you.””
Maya froze.
“You?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I know you hate me.””
Maya said nothing.
“But your mother knew something was going to happen.””
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“She came to me.””
Marcus looked shocked.
“Why you?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Because she knew I would do anything for Brielle.””
Brielle stared.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked at her daughter.
“It means she knew I understood what it was like to lose someone.””
Maya’s anger softened slightly.
Only slightly.
“What happened that night?””
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“The night your mother died, she came to my house.””
Marcus froze.
“She came to you?””
“Yes.””
“What did she say?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“She said she found something.””
Maya leaned closer.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“She said someone had been moving money.””
Marcus frowned.
“Whose money?””
Vanessa answered quietly.
“Family money.””
Nobody moved.
Maya felt a new fear.
Her mother wasn’t just hiding a secret.
She was investigating someone.
Vanessa continued.
“She told me if anything happened, I had to make sure the necklace stayed hidden.””
“Why didn’t you?””
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“Because I failed.””
The words surprised Maya.
“You tried to sell it.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I thought I could end it.””
“End what?””
Vanessa looked at the document.
“The search.””
A sudden sound came from outside.
A car engine.
Everyone turned.
Another vehicle had stopped in front of the house.
Marcus walked to the window.
His face changed.
“What now?””
Maya moved beside him.
“What is it?””
Marcus pointed outside.
A woman stood near the mailbox.
Holding a folder.
Lorraine stepped closer to the window.
Then she whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
Maya looked at her.
“Who is she?””
Lorraine’s face had lost all color.
“That woman…”
She swallowed.
“Was the last person your mother called before she disappeared.””
The woman outside lifted her hand.
And waved directly at Maya.
Then she held up the folder.
