Chapter 3: The Stranger With Her Mother’s Name
The car door closed slowly.
Nobody in the yard spoke.
Maya watched the stranger walk toward them.
She was a Black woman in her sixties, wearing a navy coat despite the warm weather. Her eyes moved immediately to the necklace in Maya’s hand.
Not the people.
Not the broken picture.
The necklace.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Can I help you?””
The woman stopped.
Her eyes stayed on Maya.
“I believe you already have.””
Maya felt a chill.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked at the necklace again.
“That belonged to your mother.””
Maya instinctively pulled it closer.
“How do you know?””
The woman reached into her purse and pulled out a small envelope.
“I was hoping I wouldn’t have to come here.””
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
“You need to leave.””
The woman looked at her.
“Still trying to control everything, Vanessa?””
Maya noticed the way Vanessa reacted.
Like she had been slapped.
“You don’t belong here,” Vanessa said.
The woman smiled sadly.
“That’s what you told me twenty years ago.””
Marcus looked confused.
“Who is this?””
The woman handed him the envelope.
“My name is Lorraine.””
Marcus looked at the envelope.
Then at Vanessa.
Maya watched her father’s face change.
“You know her.””
Vanessa looked away.
Marcus opened the envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
He stared at it.
Maya couldn’t see clearly from where she stood.
“What is it?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
“Dad?””
He slowly handed it to Maya.
The picture showed her mother standing beside Lorraine.
They were younger.
Happy.
And standing in front of the same bank where Safe Deposit Box 317 was located.
On the back of the photo was a handwritten message.
Maya recognized her mother’s handwriting immediately.
Her breathing stopped.
“What does it say?””
Marcus read quietly.
“‘If anything happens to me, Lorraine knows the truth.’”
The yard went silent.
Maya looked at Vanessa.
Her stepmother looked terrified.
Brielle noticed too.
“Mom?””
Vanessa ignored her.
She stared at Lorraine.
“You promised you would never come back.””
Lorraine shook her head.
“I promised your friend.””
Maya felt her heart race.
“My mother?””
Lorraine nodded.
“Yes.””
Maya stepped forward.
“What truth?””
Lorraine looked at her.
The sadness in her eyes made Maya afraid.
“Your mother knew someone was trying to erase her.””
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Lorraine looked toward the document.
“It means Safe Deposit Box 317 was never about money.””
Vanessa’s voice became louder.
“Stop.””
Nobody listened.
Lorraine continued.
“Your mother left something behind because she knew the person closest to her would try to destroy the evidence.””
Maya looked at Vanessa.
The words landed like a weight.
Vanessa shook her head.
“You’re lying.””
Lorraine smiled faintly.
“Then why did you try to sell the necklace this morning?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Brielle looked at her mother.
“You knew?””
Vanessa turned.
“Brielle—”
“No.””
Brielle stepped back.
“You knew that necklace mattered?””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“You don’t understand.””
Maya looked at Marcus.
“Dad, read the document.””
Marcus looked down.
He still hadn’t finished.
His hands trembled.
Slowly, he read the next section.
Then his face went pale.
“Maya…”
“What?””
He looked at her.
“The box contains evidence from the night your mother died.””
The world became silent.
Maya stopped breathing.
She remembered the hospital.
The phone call.
The empty chair at home.
The explanations that never made sense.
Her mother’s death had always been called an accident.
But now nobody was saying that word.
Vanessa suddenly moved toward the document again.
Marcus stepped back.
“Don’t.””
Her voice cracked.
“Marcus, you don’t know what you’re doing.””
Maya stared at her.
“What are you afraid we’ll find?””
Vanessa looked at her.
For a moment, the mask disappeared.
And Maya saw something she had never seen before.
Fear.
Real fear.
Lorraine stepped closer.
“There’s one more thing you need to know.””
Maya turned.
“What?””
Lorraine looked at the necklace.
“The key doesn’t open the box by itself.””
Maya frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Lorraine’s eyes moved toward the broken photograph on the grass.
“The second key was hidden somewhere your mother knew only you would find.””
Maya looked down.
The necklace.
The photo.
The document.
Everything her mother left behind.
Everything Vanessa wanted gone.
Then Marcus suddenly flipped the document over.
A small handwritten note was hidden on the back.
His face changed.
“Maya…”
She looked at him.
“What?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Your mother wrote this after she discovered who was trying to take everything from you.””
Maya reached for the paper.
But before she could touch it, Vanessa grabbed the document.
And whispered:
“She was never supposed to tell you.””
Maya stared at her.
“Tell me what?””
Vanessa looked down at the note.
Then at Maya.
And said:
“Who your real enemy was.””
May you like
The note slipped from Vanessa’s shaking fingers.
And for the first time in twenty years, Maya saw the truth beginning to come out.
