Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

The sentence stayed in the air.

The box was never supposed to still exist.

Maya felt like she was standing in the middle of a storm that had started years before she was old enough to understand it.

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked toward the street.

Like she was searching for an escape.

“There are things you don’t know.””

Marcus laughed once.

A cold, humorless sound.

“You’re right.””

He pointed at the document.

“There are apparently a lot of things I don’t know.””

Maya watched Vanessa carefully.

For years, Vanessa had always seemed untouchable.

She controlled conversations.

She ended arguments.

She made people feel guilty until they apologized.

But today, she looked cornered.

And cornered people told the truth.

Sometimes.

Maya stepped closer.

“What happened to my mother?””

Vanessa’s eyes moved to her.

“I don’t know.””

Maya shook her head.

“No.””

“I don’t.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

Vanessa’s expression softened slightly.

“I know what you think of me.””

“You don’t know anything about what I think.””

“I’m the woman who married your father after your mother died.””

Maya froze.

Vanessa continued.

“You think I replaced her.””

“You did everything you could to erase her.””

Vanessa looked hurt.

Then angry.

“That is not true.””

“Then why were you selling her things?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Brielle stood near the garage door, silent.

Maya noticed something.

Brielle wasn’t defending her mother anymore.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“You need to explain.””

Vanessa finally looked at him.

“Your wife was afraid.””

Marcus frowned.

“My wife?””

“Your first wife.””

Maya felt a chill.

Vanessa continued.

“She believed someone was watching her.””

Marcus shook his head.

“She never told me that.””

“Because she didn’t trust you.””

The words cut deep.

Maya saw her father react.

But before he could respond, Lorraine spoke.

“She trusted him.””

Everyone turned.

Lorraine stood beside the table.

“She just didn’t know who to trust around him.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What are you saying?””

Lorraine looked at Maya.

“I’m saying your mother was trying to protect her daughter.””

Maya’s heart pounded.

“From who?””

Lorraine didn’t answer immediately.

She looked at Vanessa.

And Vanessa looked back.

Like two people who had been carrying the same secret for decades.

Finally, Lorraine said:

“From someone inside the family.””

Maya felt sick.

Brielle whispered:

“Mom?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Don’t.””

“Is it you?””

Vanessa looked shocked.

“How could you ask me that?””

“Because everyone keeps saying the same thing.””

Brielle’s voice cracked.

“Everyone knew something except me.””

Vanessa looked away.

Marcus walked toward Lorraine.

“What exactly was in that safe deposit box?””

Lorraine looked at the necklace.

“The truth.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It’s the only answer your wife wanted.””

Marcus clenched his jaw.

“My wife?””

Lorraine nodded.

“She left instructions.””

Maya looked confused.

“Instructions for what?””

Lorraine reached into her purse again.

This time, she pulled out a small key card.

Maya recognized the symbol.

The same bank logo from the document.

“The box requires two things.””

She looked at the necklace.

“And something else.””

Marcus looked at the card.

“What is that?””

“The second piece.””

Maya stepped forward.

“Where did you get it?””

Lorraine hesitated.

Then she answered.

“Your mother gave it to me the night before she died.””

The entire yard went silent.

Maya felt tears form.

“The night before?””

Lorraine nodded.

“She knew something was coming.””

Marcus looked devastated.

“She knew?””

Lorraine looked at him.

“Yes.””

“And she didn’t tell me?””

“No.””

“Why?””

Lorraine’s expression softened.

“Because she was afraid you would do exactly what she needed you not to do.””

Marcus looked confused.

“What?””

“Trust the wrong person.””

Maya looked between them.

The pieces were connecting.

But something was missing.

A name.

A reason.

A motive.

Then Marcus noticed something.

The official document.

He picked it up again.

“There’s a date here.””

Everyone looked.

Marcus read it.

“Three days before her death.””

Maya felt a cold wave pass through her.

Three days.

That meant her mother knew something before the accident.

Marcus flipped the paper over.

A second note was hidden beneath the fold.

His eyes widened.

“What?””

Maya moved closer.

“What does it say?””

Marcus stared at the handwriting.

Then he whispered:

“‘If they tell you I died by accident, don’t believe them.’”

Maya covered her mouth.

Vanessa took a step back.

Brielle looked horrified.

Lorraine closed her eyes.

Because she already knew what came next.

Marcus turned the paper around.

There was one final sentence.

One sentence written by Maya’s mother.

A sentence that explained why the necklace had been hidden.

Marcus read it aloud.

“‘The person responsible will be the first one to beg you to stop looking.’”

May you like

Everyone slowly turned.

Toward Vanessa.
