Chapter 14: The Room She Left Behind

Maya couldn’t breathe.

The photograph showed a room she knew better than any place in the world.

The faded blue walls.

The bookshelf.

The old window overlooking the backyard.

Her childhood bedroom.

But something was different.

The picture had been taken recently.

Someone was inside her old home.

Right now.

Marcus grabbed the phone.

“Who sent this?””

Maya took it back.

“I don’t know.””

“We’re leaving.””

Vanessa stood immediately.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What now?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“If Daniel wants you to go there, it’s a trap.””

Maya looked at her.

“And if my mother hid something there?””

Vanessa had no answer.

That was the answer.

Twenty minutes later, they returned to the house.

The garage sale table was still outside.

The broken picture frame was still on the grass.

Everything looked exactly the same.

Except it wasn’t.

Maya knew that now.

Every corner held something hidden.

Marcus unlocked the front door.

“Stay close.””

They entered.

The house smelled like old wood and memories.

Maya walked slowly down the hallway.

Her childhood pictures lined the wall.

Her mother’s smile appeared in every frame.

Then she reached her bedroom.

The door was open.

She knew she had closed it before leaving.

Marcus noticed too.

“No one touches anything.””

Maya stepped inside.

Nothing looked stolen.

Nothing looked destroyed.

It was worse.

Everything looked carefully arranged.

Someone had searched without leaving a mess.

Maya walked toward her desk.

Her old notebooks were stacked neatly.

Her childhood jewelry box sat on the shelf.

Then she saw it.

A small scratch on the floor.

Near the wall.

She knelt.

“Dad.””

Marcus came over.

“What is it?””

She touched the floorboard.

“This wasn’t here before.””

He helped her lift it.

Underneath was a hidden compartment.

Inside was a small envelope.

Maya froze.

“My mother.””

Vanessa stood behind them.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

Vanessa looked at the envelope.

“That’s where she hid it.””

Maya looked at her.

“You knew?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I knew she had a hiding place.””

Marcus stared.

“You never told us?””

“She made me promise.””

Maya opened the envelope.

Inside was a flash drive.

And a handwritten note.

Her hands trembled.

“‘Maya.’”

She looked up.

“It’s for me.””

She unfolded the note.

“‘My daughter, if you found this, then the people I feared were unable to stop you.’”

Tears filled her eyes.

She continued.

“‘The truth is not hidden in the box. The box only proves where to look.’”

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Maya kept reading.

“‘The person who betrayed me was not acting alone.’”

Silence.

Everyone looked at each other.

The note continued.

“‘I made one mistake. I trusted someone who loved me.’”

Maya stopped.

Her hands shook.

“Who?””

Nobody knew.

Then the flash drive made a sound.

It turned on.

A video file appeared.

Recorded date.

The night before her mother disappeared.

Maya stared.

“Play it.””

Marcus looked uncertain.

“Maya.””

“I need to see.””

She pressed the file.

The screen showed her mother.

Older.

Tired.

Sitting in a dark room.

Maya immediately started crying.

Her mother looked directly into the camera.

“My sweet Maya.””

The sound of her voice broke everyone.

Marcus covered his mouth.

Her mother continued.

“If you are seeing this, I am either gone or someone has convinced you I am.””

Maya froze.

Gone.

Not dead.

Her mother knew.

The video continued.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

She looked frightened.

“Do not trust the person who says they were protecting you.””

Everyone went still.

Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

Maya looked at her.

The video continued.

“The person who helped me disappear did it because they loved me.””

Maya’s heart raced.

“Because they believed they were saving my life.””

Her mother looked down.

“But they also made a choice.””

A pause.

“A choice that changed everything.””

Then her mother said the words that destroyed the room.

May you like

“The person who helped me leave was your father.””

Maya dropped the laptop.
