Chapter 6: The Secret Behind the Garage Sale
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Vanessa stood beneath the bright morning sunlight, but her face looked like she had been caught in darkness.
Maya stared at her.
Not because she knew Vanessa was guilty.
She didn’t.
But because her mother’s final warning had pointed directly at this moment.
The first person to beg them to stop looking.
And Vanessa had done exactly that.
“Say something,” Marcus said.
Vanessa looked at him.
“I can explain.””
Maya’s heart sank.
Everyone said that when the truth was closing in.
Explain.
Not deny.
Explain.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Then explain.””
Vanessa looked at the neighbors’ empty driveway.
The abandoned garage sale.
The necklace.
The document.
Then she whispered:
“I was trying to protect this family.””
Maya shook her head.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“From what?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“From your mother’s choices.””
Maya felt anger rise.
“My mother died.””
Vanessa’s voice softened.
“And that doesn’t mean she was right about everything.””
Marcus looked furious.
“Careful.””
“No, Marcus.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You deserve to know.””
Maya watched her father.
He looked tired.
Older.
Like the last hour had aged him years.
Vanessa continued.
“Your wife was searching for something.””
“What?””
“I don’t know.””
Maya almost laughed.
“You don’t know?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“She stopped trusting people.””
“Because she found out something.””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Marcus turned away.
“Unbelievable.””
Brielle suddenly spoke.
“Mom.””
Vanessa looked at her.
Brielle’s eyes were filled with confusion.
“Did you know about the box before today?””
Vanessa stayed silent.
Brielle nodded slowly.
“You did.””
“I knew there was something.””
“What something?””
Vanessa looked at her daughter.
“A mistake.””
The word made Maya’s stomach tighten.
“A mistake?””
Vanessa looked at the necklace.
“Your mother thought that necklace was protection.””
Maya touched it.
“It was.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
She took a breath.
“It was a reminder.””
“Of what?””
Vanessa looked at Maya.
“Of what happened the night she died.””
The air disappeared from Maya’s lungs.
Marcus stepped forward.
“You were there?””
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“I didn’t say that.””
“But you know something.””
Vanessa looked away.
Maya saw it.
The hesitation.
The fear.
The memory.
“You were there.””
Vanessa didn’t respond.
Maya’s voice cracked.
“You were there when my mother died.””
Vanessa finally looked at her.
And the silence was an answer.
Marcus stepped back.
“No.””
Vanessa immediately said:
“Marcus—”
“No.””
His voice shook.
“You were there?””
“I was nearby.””
“Nearby?””
Marcus stared at her.
“You let me believe she was alone.””
“I didn’t know what happened.””
“But you knew something.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“I knew she was scared.””
Maya froze.
“What did she say?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“She said if anything happened, you would need the necklace.””
Maya felt her fingers tighten.
“What else?””
Vanessa looked toward Lorraine.
Lorraine nodded slowly.
“Tell her.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I found your mother in the house that night.””
Marcus looked confused.
“She came home from the hospital?””
“No.””
Vanessa’s voice became barely audible.
“She never made it to the hospital.””
Nobody spoke.
Maya felt dizzy.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“Your mother wasn’t in an accident.””
The sentence broke something inside Maya.
All the years.
All the explanations.
All the unanswered questions.
Gone.
Marcus whispered:
“Then what happened?””
Vanessa looked at the document.
“The person who caused it wanted everyone to believe it was an accident.””
Maya stepped forward.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked at her.
And for a moment, Maya thought she would finally say the name.
But Vanessa stopped.
Her eyes moved past Maya.
Toward the street.
Everyone followed her gaze.
A black SUV had stopped outside the house.
The driver’s door opened.
A man stepped out.
He was older.
Well-dressed.
Calm.
Too calm.
Lorraine’s face changed immediately.
“No.””
Marcus noticed.
“Who is that?””
Lorraine whispered:
“The one person your mother was afraid would find the box.””
The man walked toward the yard.
Vanessa looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
The man stopped at the gate.
Then he smiled.
“Maya.””
She froze.
She had never met him before.
But he knew her name.
He looked directly at the necklace.
And said:
“You finally found what your mother hid from me.””
Nobody moved.
Marcus stepped in front of Maya.
“Who are you?””
The man smiled.
And answered:
“The person who knows what’s inside Safe Deposit Box 317.””
He reached into his jacket.
Pulled out a photograph.
And Maya saw the face in the picture.
May you like
Her own mother.
Standing beside him.
