Chapter 7: The Man in the Photograph

Maya stared at the photograph in the stranger’s hand.

The world around her seemed to disappear.

The bright sky.

The quiet street.

The folding table filled with her mother’s belongings.

Everything blurred except the image.

Her mother.

Standing beside a man Maya had never seen before.

A man who had just walked into her yard and claimed to know the secret her mother died protecting.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Put that picture down.””

The man didn’t move.

Instead, he looked at Maya.

“You have her eyes.””

Maya felt her stomach twist.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at Marcus first.

Then Vanessa.

Then Lorraine.

Like he was enjoying watching every person react.

“My name is Daniel.””

Lorraine’s face tightened.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Daniel smiled slightly.

“Neither should you.””

Marcus moved closer.

“You need to leave my property.””

Daniel finally looked at him.

“You still think this is about property?””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“This is about your wife.””

Maya’s breathing became shallow.

“My mother knew you?””

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“She knew me very well.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel looked amused.

“You never knew the whole story, did you?””

Maya looked at her father.

The pain on his face answered before he did.

“Who are you?”” Marcus asked again.

Daniel stepped closer to the gate.

“I was someone your wife trusted.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked at her.

“Interesting.””

His smile disappeared.

“You’re finally admitting you know me.””

Vanessa looked frightened.

“I know what you are.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“No, Vanessa. You know what you did.””

Maya felt a chill.

“What did she do?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel looked at Maya.

“That’s what your mother wanted you to discover.””

Marcus clenched his fists.

“Don’t talk about her.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

For the first time, he looked serious.

“Your wife was brave.””

Maya hated that she believed him.

“She was also desperate.””

“Why?”” Maya asked.

Daniel looked at the necklace.

“Because she found out the truth.””

Maya held the necklace tighter.

“What truth?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead, he held up the photograph.

“Ask your father why he never saw this.””

Marcus froze.

Maya turned.

“Dad?””

Marcus stared at the picture.

“I’ve never seen it.””

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.””

Maya looked between them.

“How could you not know?””

Marcus looked hurt.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel gave a quiet laugh.

“That’s the problem.””

Maya felt anger rising.

“Stop talking in riddles.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Your mother kept the necklace because she knew someone would come looking.””

“And you’re that someone?””

“I’m someone who wants the truth.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“No, you want what’s in that box.””

Daniel looked at her.

“And you don’t?””

The silence was immediate.

Maya noticed something.

They were all afraid of the same thing.

The box.

Daniel placed the photograph on the edge of the table.

“Safe Deposit Box 317 contains proof.””

“Proof of what?”” Marcus demanded.

Daniel looked at Maya.

“Proof that your mother was betrayed.””

Maya felt tears forming.

“By who?””

Daniel looked directly at Vanessa.

Then at Marcus.

Then back at Maya.

“That’s the question you need to answer.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You’re trying to turn us against each other.””

Daniel smiled.

“No.””

He pointed at the necklace.

“Your wife already did that.””

Maya felt hurt.

She didn’t want to hear it.

Her mother had been the person she trusted most.

The idea that her mother had hidden things from everyone felt impossible.

But the evidence was everywhere.

Daniel turned to leave.

Marcus called after him.

“Wait.””

Daniel stopped.

“What?””

Marcus stepped forward.

“If you know what’s inside the box, why don’t you just tell us?””

Daniel looked over his shoulder.

“Because your wife didn’t leave it for me.””

He looked at Maya.

“She left it for her daughter.””

Maya froze.

Daniel continued.

“But before you open it, you need to know something.””

“What?””

Daniel’s face became serious.

“Your mother didn’t die because she found a secret.””

He paused.

“She died because she was going to reveal it.””

Maya felt the air leave her lungs.

Daniel walked away.

But before reaching his car, he stopped.

“Oh, and Maya?””

She looked at him.

He pointed at the photograph.

“The man standing beside your mother wasn’t her friend.””

Maya stared.

“Then who was he?””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“He was the reason she started hiding everything.””

Then he got into the SUV and drove away.

Nobody spoke.

Maya looked down at the photograph.

Her mother’s smile.

The unknown man beside her.

May you like

And a question that burned deeper than anything else.

Who was her mother really running from?
