Chapter 4: The Name Hidden in the Note

Maya had spent twenty years believing her mother’s death was the one thing in her life she would never understand.

Now she realized she had been wrong.

The mystery had never ended.

It had been waiting.

The note lay on the grass between Vanessa and Marcus, its edges trembling in the wind. Nobody moved to pick it up.

The garage sale had disappeared.

The neighbors had gone.

The jewelry boxes, old books, and household items on the folding table no longer looked like things being sold.

They looked like evidence.

Marcus slowly stepped forward.

“Vanessa, move away from that paper.””

Vanessa stared at him.

Her face was pale.

“You don’t understand what you’re about to destroy.””

Maya’s eyebrows tightened.

“Destroy?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I mean what you’re about to uncover.””

“That’s not the same thing.””

Vanessa looked away.

For years, Maya had seen her stepmother as cold.

Distant.

Controlling.

But she had never seen fear in her eyes.

Not until today.

Marcus picked up the note.

His fingers shook slightly as he unfolded it.

Maya moved closer.

“Dad.””

Marcus looked at the handwriting.

It was unmistakable.

Her mother’s handwriting.

The same handwriting that had filled birthday cards and lunch notes.

The same handwriting that had written “I love you” on a napkin the week before everything changed.

Marcus read silently.

Then his jaw tightened.

“What does it say?”” Maya asked.

He looked at her.

“I don’t know if you’re ready.””

Maya almost laughed.

“Dad, I found out my mother hid evidence before she died. I found out Vanessa knew. I found out everyone kept secrets from me.””

She stepped closer.

“I’m already past ready.””

Marcus looked back down.

Then he read.

“‘Maya, if you are reading this, it means the necklace was almost lost.’”

Maya’s hand went to the gold chain around her neck.

Her mother’s necklace.

The one Brielle almost sold.

Marcus continued.

“‘Trust your father only after he knows the full truth.’”

The words hit Marcus hard.

Maya noticed.

“You didn’t know.””

Marcus swallowed.

“No.””

“Why would she write that?””

“I don’t know.””

Vanessa gave a quiet, bitter laugh.

“That’s what she wanted.””

Everyone looked at her.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“She wanted everyone suspicious of everyone else.””

Maya turned.

“You’re defending her?””

“No.””

Vanessa’s voice dropped.

“I’m telling you your mother knew how to manipulate people.””

Maya felt anger rise.

“You don’t get to talk about her like that.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“And you don’t get to pretend you knew everything about her.””

The words were sharp.

Too sharp.

Marcus immediately stepped between them.

“Enough.””

But Maya couldn’t stop.

“What else are you hiding?””

Vanessa looked at her.

For a moment, Maya thought she might finally answer.

Instead, Vanessa looked toward Brielle.

“Go inside.””

Brielle didn’t move.

“Mom.””

“I said go inside.””

“No.””

Everyone turned.

Brielle’s voice shook.

“I want to know what’s happening.””

Vanessa stared at her.

“You don’t.””

“I was the one selling the necklace.””

Brielle looked at Maya.

“I didn’t know.””

Maya said nothing.

Brielle swallowed.

“I swear.””

For the first time, Maya believed her.

Not completely.

But enough.

Marcus looked at the note again.

“There’s more.””

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“No.””

Marcus continued reading.

“‘The person who tried to remove the necklace will know exactly why it matters.’”

Silence.

Maya slowly looked at Brielle.

Brielle’s face changed.

Then she looked at Vanessa.

“Maya’s right.””

Vanessa frowned.

“What?””

“You told me it was worthless.””

Brielle’s voice became louder.

“You said it was just old jewelry.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“You knew it was important.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“Brielle, stop talking.””

“No.””

Brielle stepped away from her mother.

“You used me.””

The accusation hung in the air.

Vanessa looked almost offended.

“I was protecting this family.””

Maya shook her head.

“No.””

She held the necklace tightly.

“You were protecting yourself.””

A sudden sound interrupted them.

A phone ringing.

Everyone looked around.

It was Marcus’s phone.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

“Who is it?”” Maya asked.

Marcus didn’t answer.

The caller ID showed a name.

A name that made Vanessa go completely still.

Marcus answered.

“Hello?””

The voice on the other end was too quiet for Maya to hear.

Marcus walked a few steps away.

Then his face turned pale.

“What?””

Maya watched him.

“What happened?””

Marcus slowly lowered the phone.

The color had disappeared from his face.

“It’s the bank.””

Nobody spoke.

“What did they say?”” Maya asked.

Marcus looked at the necklace.

“They said someone tried to access Safe Deposit Box 317 yesterday.””

Maya’s heart stopped.

“But the necklace was here.””

Marcus nodded.

“That’s why they called.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Oh no.””

Everyone looked at her.

Maya narrowed her eyes.

“You know what happened?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Vanessa.””

She closed her eyes.

May you like

And then she said something that changed everything.

“The box was never supposed to still exist.””
