Chapter 2: The Line Vanessa Didn’t Want Read
Marcus held the document above his head as Vanessa stopped inches away from him.
The bright morning suddenly felt colder.
The neighbors who had been browsing the garage sale slowly backed away, sensing they were watching something much bigger than an argument over old belongings.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“What is this?””
Vanessa forced a laugh.
“Nothing.””
“Nothing?””
Marcus pointed at the paper.
“You just tried to take it out of my hands.””
“It’s private.””
Maya stepped closer.
“Private? It has my mother’s name on it.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“Maya, you don’t know what you’re looking at.””
“Then explain it.””
Vanessa stayed silent.
That silence answered more than words could.
Brielle folded her arms, but her confidence was gone.
“Mom, what’s happening?””
Vanessa glanced at her.
“Stay out of this.””
Brielle blinked.
“You told me we were just selling old jewelry.””
Maya turned toward her.
“You didn’t know?””
Brielle looked away.
For the first time, Maya saw something besides arrogance on her stepsister’s face.
Confusion.
Marcus carefully unfolded the document again.
The paper was old, but protected.
At the top was Maya’s mother’s full name.
Underneath was a bank logo and several lines of official writing.
Marcus read silently.
Maya watched every emotion move across his face.
Shock.
Pain.
Anger.
“Marcus?”” Vanessa asked.
He didn’t answer.
“Marcus, give me that.””
He finally looked up.
“Why didn’t you tell me about this?””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“Because it wasn’t important.””
Maya almost laughed.
“A safe deposit box wasn’t important?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“You’re twenty years old, Maya. You don’t understand adult matters.””
Maya tightened her grip around the necklace.
“You keep saying that.””
She stepped closer.
“But somehow every adult in this family knew something except me.””
The sentence hit Marcus.
He looked away.
That hurt Maya more than Vanessa’s words.
“Dad?””
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“I didn’t know.””
“Are you sure?””
His silence lasted too long.
Maya’s eyes filled with tears.
“You knew something.””
“No.””
“Then why do you look guilty?””
Marcus looked at the broken photograph on the grass.
His voice became quieter.
“Because your mother and I kept secrets from each other.””
Nobody moved.
Maya stared at him.
“What kind of secrets?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Vanessa quickly interrupted.
“This is exactly why your mother didn’t want you involved.””
Maya turned.
“My mother didn’t want me involved?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She knew you were emotional.””
Maya laughed bitterly.
“She knew I loved her.””
Vanessa looked away.
Marcus looked back at the document.
He noticed a folded section near the bottom.
Maya saw it too.
“What’s there?””
Vanessa moved forward again.
“Marcus, don’t.””
But this time, Marcus didn’t stop.
He unfolded the paper.
The sound of the page opening felt like a door unlocking.
His eyes scanned the next section.
Then he froze.
Maya stepped closer.
“Dad?””
Marcus slowly lowered the paper.
“What?””
“What does it say?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Is this real?””
Vanessa didn’t respond.
“Is this real?”” he repeated.
Brielle looked between them.
“Mom, what is he talking about?””
Vanessa finally snapped.
“Enough.””
Her voice was sharp.
Everyone became silent.
She pointed at Maya.
“You have no idea what your mother was capable of.””
Maya felt her heart stop.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa’s face changed.
She realized she had revealed too much.
Marcus stepped between them.
“Careful.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You weren’t there.””
“I was her husband.””
“You were her husband after everything happened.””
Maya stared.
“After what happened?””
Nobody answered.
The question stayed in the air.
Then Marcus looked down at the document again.
His hand shook slightly.
“Maya…”
“What?””
“There’s a name written here.””
She stepped closer.
“Whose name?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Then back at Maya.
“It’s not your mother’s.””
A terrible silence followed.
Maya felt her fingers tighten around the necklace.
“What name is it?””
Marcus opened his mouth.
But before he could speak, Vanessa grabbed the edge of the paper.
“No.””
Marcus pulled it away.
Vanessa’s eyes filled with panic.
And Maya knew.
Whatever was written there was the reason her mother had hidden the necklace.
The reason Vanessa wanted it gone.
The reason Brielle almost sold it for ten dollars.
Marcus looked at the final line.
Then whispered:
“Why would your mother leave proof that…”
He stopped.
Maya stared at him.
“Proof of what?””
Marcus looked toward the house.
And then Maya saw something that made her blood run cold.
A second car had pulled into the driveway.
