Chapter 10: The Hidden Room Beneath the Truth
The photo on my phone burned into my mind.
Eli.
My son.
Standing in the downstairs hallway only moments ago.
And the message beneath it:
*I HAVE HIM NOW.*
For a second, the entire world stopped.
Then I moved.
I ran.
“ELI!””
My voice tore through the mansion.
I pushed past Daniel, past the open office door, past every question I had carried for six years.
None of it mattered.
Not the lies.
Not the betrayal.
Not the truth about my past.
Only my son.
The staircase blurred as I rushed down.
“Victor!””
Amelia’s voice followed behind me.
Grace was standing in the living room.
Alone.
Her face was pale.
My heart dropped.
“Where is he?””
Grace looked like she couldn’t breathe.
“Sir, I was right here.””
“Where is my son?””
She pointed toward the hallway.
“I heard a noise. I turned for one second…”
Her voice broke.
“One second.””
I looked around.
The mansion was silent.
Too silent.
“Eli!””
No answer.
I searched every room.
The living room.
The kitchen.
The library.
Nothing.
Then I saw something on the marble floor.
A small toy car.
Eli’s favorite.
He carried it everywhere.
I picked it up.
My hands shook.
Grace covered her mouth.
“Oh no…”
Behind me, Amelia arrived.
The moment she saw the toy, her face changed.
“He knows.””
I turned.
“Who?””
She looked toward the hallway.
“Daniel.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“He knows where Eli goes when he’s scared.””
Amelia’s eyes filled with fear.
“He studied us.””
I looked at the security monitors.
The screens were still flashing red.
I grabbed my phone.
The photo.
The timestamp.
Then I noticed something.
The picture wasn’t taken downstairs.
Not exactly.
Behind Eli was a wall.
A wall I recognized.
The old family portrait hallway.
But there was something wrong.
A door.
A hidden door.
My eyes narrowed.
“That hallway.””
Everyone looked at me.
I walked quickly.
At the end of the corridor was a large painting of Amelia and me from years ago.
I had walked past it thousands of times.
But now I noticed something.
The frame was slightly moved.
I pushed it.
The painting shifted.
Behind it was a keypad.
Grace stepped back.
“I never knew that was there.””
Neither did I.
My phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
*YOU WERE ALWAYS LIVING ABOVE IT.*
Daniel.
My blood boiled.
I entered random numbers.
Nothing.
Then Amelia stepped forward.
Her face was filled with realization.
“Try Eli’s birthday.””
I looked at her.
“You knew?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“But Daniel always loved patterns.””
I entered the date.
The lock clicked.
The hidden door opened.
Inside was a small room.
Not an office.
Not storage.
A surveillance room.
Monitors covered the walls.
Hundreds of recordings.
Our family.
Our lives.
My stomach turned.
“He watched us.””
Amelia walked inside slowly.
“He was obsessed.””
On one screen, I saw myself coming home from work.
Another showed Eli playing in the backyard.
Another showed Bianca sitting alone after everyone slept.
Grace looked horrified.
“This is sick.””
I searched through the files.
Then one folder caught my attention.
*ELI.*
I opened it.
Inside were hundreds of videos.
Dates.
Notes.
Plans.
I clicked the newest file.
The screen showed Eli sitting in a chair.
My heart stopped.
He looked scared.
But he was not crying.
That meant something.
My son was trying to be brave.
Daniel sat across from him.
“Eli, do you remember what I told you?””
The camera angle didn’t show Daniel’s face.
Only Eli.
The boy looked down.
“You said my daddy wasn’t my real daddy.””
The room went silent.
Amelia gasped.
Grace started crying.
I couldn’t move.
Daniel’s voice continued.
“And what did I tell you about your mother?””
Eli whispered:
“You said she left because she didn’t love us.””
My hands curled into fists.
The recording continued.
“But Mommy came back.””
Eli looked up.
“Is she mad at me?””
My chest broke.
Daniel answered:
“No.””
A pause.
“She’s mad because your daddy kept you from knowing the truth.””
I shut the recording off.
I couldn’t listen anymore.
He had been poisoning my son.
Slowly.
Carefully.
For years.
A new file appeared automatically.
The title:
*THE FIRST NIGHT.*
Amelia froze.
“Victor…”
I looked at her.
“What?””
Her face lost all color.
“That’s the night I disappeared.””
I clicked.
The video opened.
A younger Amelia appeared.
Standing in this same hidden room.
But she wasn’t alone.
Bianca was there.
And they were arguing.
Bianca was crying.
“I can’t do this anymore.””
Young Amelia replied:
“You should have thought about that before helping him.””
My breath stopped.
Helping who?
Then the camera angle changed.
A third person entered.
Daniel.
But he wasn’t angry.
He was smiling.
And he said something that answered the question I had been asking all night.
“Ladies, we need to decide what happens to Victor’s family.””
The recording froze.
Then the screen went black.
A final message appeared.
*PART TWO IS IN THE ROOM WHERE IT ALL STARTED.*
Amelia looked at me.
“The hospital.””
I stared at the message.
And for the first time, I understood.
May you like
The mansion wasn’t where this nightmare began.
It was only where the secrets were stored.
