Chapter 4: The Message I Was Never Meant to Hear
The notification on my phone kept flashing.
*AMELIA’S FINAL MESSAGE.*
Five words.
That was all it took to make the entire room feel smaller.
Nobody spoke.
Not Amelia.
Not Bianca.
Not Grace.
Even Eli, who had spent the last few minutes clinging to the mother he thought he had lost forever, looked between the adults and sensed that something was wrong.
I held the phone tighter.
“Who created this recording?””
No one answered.
I looked at Bianca.
Her face had gone pale.
“Was it you?””
She shook her head quickly.
“No.””
The speed of her answer bothered me.
Because it sounded less like innocence and more like fear.
Amelia stepped closer.
“Victor, you need to understand something.””
I turned toward her.
“Do I?””
My voice came out colder than I expected.
“You disappeared for six years. My son grew up asking why his mother left. I spent every birthday pretending I wasn’t hoping you would walk through that door.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
“No,” I said quietly.
“You don’t.””
The room went silent again.
I loved her.
That was the worst part.
Even after everything.
Even after the pain.
A part of me still remembered the woman who used to sing to Eli before bed. The woman who danced with me in our kitchen while dinner burned on the stove.
But that woman had vanished.
And now she was standing in front of me with secrets.
“Why didn’t you come back?”” I asked.
Amelia looked down.
“Because I thought someone would hurt you and Eli if I did.””
My eyes moved toward Bianca.
Bianca looked away.
That was enough.
I unlocked the recording.
Everyone watched as the security footage transformed into a video file.
The screen showed Amelia.
But not the Amelia standing in front of me.
This Amelia looked exhausted.
Her hair was messy.
Her eyes were swollen from crying.
She was sitting somewhere dark.
A place I didn’t recognize.
The timestamp was six years old.
My breath caught.
Then her voice came through the speaker.
“Victor, if you’re watching this, it means I couldn’t come home.””
Eli moved closer to me.
I lowered the phone slightly.
Amelia continued.
“I need you to believe one thing. I did not leave you. I did not leave Eli.””
My throat tightened.
The words I had waited years to hear came from a screen.
“I was forced to disappear.””
Grace covered her mouth.
Bianca whispered:
“Turn it off.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
The video continued.
“I found out something about our family. Something I should have discovered sooner.””
Amelia paused.
Her eyes moved toward the camera.
“I trusted the wrong person.””
The screen flickered.
Then she said a name.
A name that made Bianca take a step backward.
“Bianca.””
Eli looked up at me.
I didn’t move.
I couldn’t.
The recording continued.
“Bianca knew about the investigation. She knew what I found. She knew I was going to tell Victor.””
Bianca shook her head.
“That’s not true.””
Nobody listened.
Amelia’s voice cracked.
“I don’t know if she planned what happened next, but I know she was involved.””
The screen froze for a second.
Then the message ended.
The room stayed frozen with it.
I looked at Bianca.
She looked broken.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Broken.
“Say something.””
She stared at the floor.
“Victor…”
“Say something.””
She finally looked up.
“I can explain.””
I laughed once.
A painful, empty sound.
“That’s what everyone says right before they explain why they lied.””
Amelia stepped forward.
“Victor, there’s more.””
I turned.
“What more?””
She looked toward the hallway.
“The person who helped me disappear.””
A chill ran through me.
“Who?””
Before she answered, Eli spoke.
“Daddy.””
I looked down.
He was holding my jacket.
“She told me Mommy was scared.””
I knelt.
“Who told you?””
Eli looked toward Bianca.
“She said Mommy did bad things.””
The room changed.
Because suddenly I understood.
Bianca wasn’t just hiding information.
She had been shaping my son’s memories.
I stood slowly.
“Did you tell my son his mother was dangerous?””
Bianca’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to protect him.””
“From his own mother?””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“From the truth.””
Nobody moved.
Then the mansion lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
The security system made a strange sound.
Grace looked up.
“Sir…”
The security monitor beside the staircase turned on by itself.
A new camera angle appeared.
The hallway.
The living room.
The front entrance.
And then another video file appeared.
Not from six years ago.
From today.
Recorded only minutes earlier.
The title appeared:
*BIANCA’S PRIVATE OFFICE CAMERA.*
My stomach dropped.
Because someone had been recording Bianca.
And whoever saved that footage wanted me to see it.
The screen opened.
And the first thing we heard was Bianca saying my name.
“Victor can never know what happened to Amelia.””
Bianca froze.
Because she recognized the voice.
May you like
Then the recording continued.
And the person standing beside Bianca in the video made everyone in the room gasp.
