Chapter 3: The Woman at the Door
The entire mansion went silent.
Not quiet.
Silent.
The kind of silence that comes before something breaks.
I stared at the name glowing on my phone screen.
Amelia Hayes.
My wife.
Eli’s mother.
The woman everyone said was gone.
Grace looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“Victor…”
I couldn’t move.
My mind was fighting with my memories.
Six years of unanswered questions.
Six years of wondering if she was dead.
Six years of trying to raise our son while pretending I wasn’t waiting for a miracle.
And now her name was on my security system.
At my front door.
Bianca looked like she had stopped breathing.
That told me everything.
She knew.
“Why are you scared?”” I asked her.
She didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Bianca, why are you scared?””
Her hands shook.
“I didn’t know she would come here.””
Those words hit harder than any confession.
Not “I don’t know who she is.””
Not “This is impossible.””
She knew exactly who was outside.
Grace whispered:
“Oh my God.””
I walked toward the entrance.
Behind me, Bianca spoke.
“Victor, wait.””
I stopped.
Slowly, I turned around.
“Why?””
She looked desperate.
“Because you don’t understand.””
“Then help me understand.””
She looked at Eli.
That made my blood run cold.
“Why are you looking at my son?””
Bianca immediately looked away.
“I was trying to protect him.””
I almost laughed.
“Protect him?””
I looked at the bruises forming where Eli had been grabbed.
“From what?””
She had no answer.
I opened the security camera feed.
The screen showed the front porch.
A woman stood outside.
Her face was partially hidden by the camera angle.
But I knew.
I knew before I could see clearly.
Because my heart knew.
Eli ran toward the screen.
“Mommy?””
That single word broke the room.
Bianca closed her eyes.
Grace began crying.
And I stood there watching the woman I had buried in my mind for six years standing just feet away.
I pressed the door button.
The lock clicked.
Then the front door slowly opened.
A woman stepped inside.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakably familiar.
Amelia.
Her eyes immediately found Eli.
Neither of them moved.
Then Eli whispered:
“Mommy?””
Amelia covered her mouth.
Tears rolled down her face.
“My baby…”
Eli ran.
I expected joy.
I expected relief.
But before Amelia could even hold him, Bianca spoke.
“You can’t be here.””
Everyone froze.
Amelia looked at her.
A painful smile crossed her face.
“I know.””
My eyes moved between them.
“You two know each other.””
Neither answered.
I felt something inside me crack.
All these years.
All these lies.
All these secrets.
My wife and my missing wife were standing in the same room.
And my son was caught between them.
“Someone is going to explain,” I said.
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
Amelia looked at me.
“Victor, I never wanted you involved.””
“Involved in what?””
She looked at Bianca.
Bianca looked away.
Then Amelia said something that changed the air in the room.
“The night I disappeared…”
She stopped.
Her eyes filled with fear.
“The night I disappeared wasn’t an accident.””
I stepped forward.
“What are you saying?””
Amelia looked at Bianca.
And Bianca whispered:
“Don’t.””
But Amelia continued.
“She knows why I left.””
The room exploded with silence.
I looked at Bianca.
The woman I had trusted.
The woman who had raised my son beside me.
The woman who had just been exposed by her own security footage.
“Why?”” I asked.
Bianca’s eyes filled with tears.
For the first time, she didn’t look cruel.
She looked terrified.
Then my phone vibrated.
A new notification appeared from the security system.
A saved recording had been unlocked.
The title was:
“Amelia’s Final Message.””
I looked at the screen.
Then at my wife.
Then at the woman who had returned after six years.
May you like
And before I could press play, Bianca whispered:
“Victor… if you watch that, you’ll never see me the same way again.””
