Chapter 12: The Price of the Truth

I stared at the message.

*COME ALONE IF YOU WANT ELI BACK.*

Every instinct inside me screamed to go.

Every father’s instinct.

But every lesson from the past six years told me the same thing.

Daniel wanted me emotional.

He wanted me reckless.

He wanted me alone.

And I couldn’t give him that.

I looked at Amelia.

“He knows exactly what I’ll do.””

She nodded.

“That’s why he sent it.””

Bianca stepped forward.

“Victor, you can’t go alone.””

I looked at her.

“You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore.””

The words hurt her.

But she accepted them.

“I deserve that.””

For once, she didn’t fight.

Marcus stood near the door.

“I can get you inside.””

I looked at him.

“Why should I trust you?””

He looked ashamed.

“Because I failed you once.””

A pause.

“And I’m trying not to fail you again.””

I wanted to believe him.

But trust was something my family had destroyed one piece at a time.

Grace came closer.

“Sir.””

I looked at her.

“Eli needs you.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

Amelia grabbed my hand.

A small gesture.

But after six years, it felt impossible.

“I’m coming with you.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand enough.””

“Victor.””

Her voice broke.

“If Daniel sees me, he’ll know I told you everything.””

“He already knows.””

She looked down.

“That’s why he’s dangerous.””

I stared at her.

Then I looked at Bianca.

The two women who had changed my life.

One through absence.

One through lies.

And somehow both were connected to the same nightmare.

“I need the truth.””

Amelia nodded.

“You’ll get it.””

The old hospital looked exactly the way I remembered.

Except now it felt like a place filled with ghosts.

Marcus led us through a side entrance.

The lights flickered.

The halls were empty.

Every step echoed.

Finally, we reached the old records room.

The place where Eli’s birth files had been stored.

The place where Daniel’s plan began.

The door opened.

Inside was Daniel.

And Eli.

My son sat on a chair.

Safe.

Alive.

But terrified.

“Daddy!””

I moved forward.

Daniel raised a hand.

“Careful.””

I stopped.

Eli looked at me.

“I knew you’d come.””

My heart broke.

“I’m here.””

Daniel smiled.

“Of course you are.””

He walked around the room.

“You always were predictable.””

I ignored him.

“Let my son go.””

Daniel laughed.

“You still think this is about kidnapping.””

“Isn’t it?””

“No.””

He looked at Eli.

“This is about ownership.””

My fists tightened.

“He’s not something you own.””

Daniel smiled.

“Neither did you.””

The room went silent.

I stepped closer.

“You spent years trying to convince me he wasn’t my son.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He pointed at me.

“I spent years making you question whether you deserved him.””

That sentence hit differently.

Because that was the truth.

Daniel didn’t want Eli.

Not completely.

He wanted to destroy my confidence.

My family.

My identity.

Amelia stepped forward.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at her.

“You ruined everything.””

She stared.

“I tried to stop you.””

“You tried to expose me.””

He smiled.

“And then you made the biggest mistake.””

“What?””

“You trusted Bianca.””

Everyone looked at Bianca.

She froze.

Daniel continued.

“She was supposed to keep you quiet.””

Bianca’s face changed.

“What?””

Daniel laughed.

“You thought you were helping her escape?””

The room went cold.

“You were helping me.””

Bianca stepped back.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at me.

“She never knew the whole plan.””

My eyes moved to Bianca.

For the first time, she looked genuinely shocked.

“What plan?””

Daniel smiled.

“The plan where Amelia disappears.””

Silence.

Then he looked at me.

“And the plan where Victor finally learns the truth about Eli.””

He reached for a folder on the table.

A final folder.

The one he had kept hidden.

“This is what you’ve been searching for.””

He placed it down.

I looked at the cover.

My name was written on it.

Then underneath:

*PATERNITY INVESTIGATION — FINAL RESULTS*

My hand reached toward it.

But before I opened it, Daniel whispered:

“Once you read that file…”

He smiled.

“You’ll have to decide which person in this room you can forgive.””

May you like

I opened the folder.

And the first page made my entire body go numb.
