Chapter 7: The Question That Changed Everything
“She found out the truth about Eli’s father.””
The sentence hung in the air.
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
I looked at Bianca.
Then Amelia.
Then my son.
Eli was still holding my hand.
His small fingers were wrapped around mine like he was afraid I might disappear.
Like everyone else had.
“What did you just say?””
My voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
Bianca looked terrified.
“Victor…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Don’t say my name like that.””
The woman I had married lowered her eyes.
Amelia looked devastated.
“Victor, please listen.””
I turned toward her.
“Listen to what?””
My voice cracked.
“That everyone in this house has been protecting me from the truth?””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could.
I looked at Eli.
My son.
The boy who had my smile.
My habits.
My laugh.
The boy I had held the night he was born.
The boy I had raised.
Then I looked back at Amelia.
“What does Daniel mean?””
She closed her eyes.
And that was the answer I didn’t want.
There was something.
Something I didn’t know.
Grace stepped forward.
“Sir, maybe we should talk somewhere else.””
“No.””
I stared at everyone.
“No more private conversations. No more secrets behind closed doors.””
My eyes stopped on Bianca.
“Not tonight.””
Eli looked up at me.
“Daddy…”
I immediately softened.
I knelt beside him.
“Hey.””
His eyes were wet.
“Am I in trouble?””
The question destroyed me.
I pulled him into my arms.
“No.””
I kissed his forehead.
“You did nothing wrong.””
He held onto me.
But I could feel him listening.
Children always listen.
Even when adults think they don’t.
I stood again.
“Amelia.””
She nodded slowly.
“I know what you’re thinking.””
“No, you don’t.””
She looked hurt.
But I continued.
“You don’t know what it feels like to spend six years wondering if your wife abandoned you.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I never abandoned you.””
“Then why didn’t you come home?””
Silence.
Finally, she answered.
“Because I found out something about Daniel.””
I waited.
“And because I found out something about Eli.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
She looked at my son.
Then at me.
“Before Eli was born, I discovered Daniel had been changing records.””
“Records?””
“Yes.””
“What records?””
She hesitated.
“Medical records.””
The room felt like it tilted.
I remembered that night.
Six years ago.
The hospital.
The paperwork.
The doctor telling us everything was normal.
The moment I held my newborn son for the first time.
“What are you saying?””
Amelia’s voice shook.
“I’m saying Daniel changed something.””
Bianca interrupted.
“Stop.””
Everyone looked at her.
She looked desperate.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.””
Amelia turned toward her.
“No. You don’t get to decide anymore.””
Then she faced me.
“Victor, I found evidence that Daniel had access to private files from the hospital.””
My hands curled into fists.
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I’m telling you the truth.””
I looked at Bianca.
“And you knew?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“You knew.””
Bianca whispered:
“Yes.””
The word hit harder than anything else.
“You knew there was something wrong, and you let me believe everything was fine?””
She cried.
“I was trying to protect Eli.””
“From what?””
She looked at him.
Then back at me.
“From losing you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You don’t protect a child by making him live inside a lie.””
No one argued.
Because it was true.
My phone buzzed.
Another security notification.
This time, a document appeared.
Not a video.
A file.
The name made Amelia go pale.
“Victor…”
I opened it.
A DNA report.
My hands froze.
I stared at the screen.
A test result.
A date from six years ago.
Before Amelia disappeared.
The room became silent.
I couldn’t read the words.
I didn’t want to.
But I had to.
The truth was sitting in my hand.
I scrolled down.
And then I saw the result.
My vision blurred.
Because the report didn’t say what I expected.
It didn’t say Eli wasn’t my son.
It said something else.
Something impossible.
A second DNA sample had been tested.
A name appeared beside it.
Daniel Cross.
The same man who had destroyed our lives.
Amelia whispered:
“He knows.””
I looked at her.
“What does he know?””
She stared at the report.
“He knows Eli is connected to him.””
The lights flickered.
Then the security system shut down.
Every screen in the mansion went black.
Except one.
The hallway camera.
A live feed appeared.
Daniel was standing outside the front gate.
May you like
Watching the house.
And smiling.
