Chapter 13: The Final Test
The first page of the file was not a DNA result.
It was a photograph.
A photograph of me.
Holding newborn Eli.
The day he was born.
My hand trembled as I turned the page.
The next document was a medical report.
Then another.
Then another.
I scanned the words, searching for the answer that had haunted me all night.
Was Eli my son?
Was every memory real?
Was every moment I shared with him built on a lie?
Then I saw it.
The result.
*Biological relationship confirmed.*
My knees almost gave out.
Eli was mine.
My son.
Always had been.
I looked up.
Daniel’s smile disappeared.
Because he knew.
He knew the truth had failed to destroy me.
“You lied,” I said.
Daniel tilted his head.
“I manipulated information.””
“You tried to make me doubt my own child.””
He didn’t deny it.
“That was the point.””
The anger inside me became something colder.
“You ruined six years of my life.””
“No.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“You ruined your own life by trusting people.””
Amelia moved beside me.
“Victor, don’t listen to him.””
But I was listening.
Not because I believed him.
Because I needed to understand.
Daniel had spent years creating chaos.
People like him always believed they were the smartest person in the room.
They always wanted someone to know how clever they were.
“Why Eli?”” I asked.
Daniel looked toward my son.
“Because you loved him.””
The answer shocked me.
Not because it made sense.
Because it revealed how empty Daniel was.
He didn’t understand love.
He only understood control.
“You saw my family and wanted to break it.””
Daniel smiled.
“I saw something I could never have.””
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Belonging.””
The room went quiet.
For the first time, Daniel looked less powerful.
More human.
Then it disappeared.
“I grew your company with you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“I sacrificed everything.””
“You stole.””
“I deserved more.””
“There it is.””
I looked at him.
“The truth.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You think you’re better than me?””
“No.””
I glanced at Eli.
“I think I’m nothing like you.””
That angered him.
A lot.
He grabbed the folder and threw it across the room.
“You want truth?””
He pointed at Bianca.
“Ask her.””
Everyone looked at her.
Bianca froze.
Daniel laughed.
“She still hasn’t told you the worst part.””
My eyes moved to Bianca.
“What worst part?””
She looked away.
“Victor…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“No more.””
Bianca closed her eyes.
Then she whispered:
“Daniel didn’t make me betray Amelia.””
The room went still.
“I chose to help him.””
Amelia looked at her.
“Why?””
Bianca’s tears fell.
“Because I was afraid.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Bianca looked at her.
“You knew something about me.””
Amelia frowned.
“What?””
“You found out who I really was.””
The silence was immediate.
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
Bianca looked at me.
“My real name isn’t Bianca Hayes.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“My father was involved with Daniel’s family.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Stop.””
For the first time, he sounded afraid.
Bianca continued.
“I knew Daniel before I knew Victor.””
Amelia whispered:
“So you were connected from the beginning.””
Bianca nodded.
“Yes.””
The truth hit one layer deeper.
Another secret beneath another secret.
“I didn’t marry you because of the company,” Bianca said.
I looked at her.
“Then why?””
Her voice broke.
“Because Daniel told me Amelia was dangerous.””
Amelia looked shocked.
“And you believed him?””
“At first.””
Bianca wiped her tears.
“Then I found out he was lying.””
“Then why didn’t you leave?””
She looked at Eli.
“Because by then, I knew too much.””
A sound interrupted us.
A small sound.
Eli.
He was crying.
Not loudly.
Quietly.
Like he had learned not to take up space.
I immediately moved toward him.
“Eli.””
He looked at me.
“Is everything because of me?””
The question destroyed me.
I knelt.
“No.””
“Yes,” he whispered.
“Everyone is fighting because of me.””
I held his face gently.
“Listen to me.””
He looked at me.
“You are not a problem.””
A tear rolled down his cheek.
“You are my son.””
I hugged him.
And for the first time that night, I stopped chasing the truth.
Because the truth was standing right in front of me.
A child who needed his father.
Daniel watched us.
And something in his expression changed.
Not anger.
Regret.
Only for a second.
Then the emergency lights flashed.
A warning alarm sounded.
Marcus looked at the control panel.
“Someone triggered the fire system.””
Daniel smiled.
“Time to leave.””
I stood.
“You’re not leaving.””
He looked at me.
“You still think this ends with me?””
The door behind him opened.
A police siren sounded outside.
Daniel’s face changed.
“How?””
I looked at Marcus.
He held up his phone.
“I sent the location.””
Daniel stared at him.
“You betrayed me.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I finally stopped protecting the wrong person.””
Daniel stepped backward.
But before he could move, he pressed a button on a small device.
The lights went out.
In the darkness, Daniel’s voice echoed.
“Ask Amelia what she really found six years ago.””
Then he was gone.
And Amelia whispered:
“He’s right.””
I turned.
“What?””
May you like
Her face was pale.
“There’s one thing I never told you.””
