Chapter 9: The Room That Was Locked for Six Years

I had spent six years believing the worst thing in my house was the empty room where Amelia’s things used to be.

I was wrong.

The worst thing was what someone had hidden while I was still living there.

Daniel’s voice came from upstairs.

Calm.

Almost friendly.

That made it worse.

“Victor, come see what your wife never told you.””

I moved toward the stairs.

Amelia grabbed my arm.

“Don’t.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because that’s what he wants.””

“He’s already inside my house.””

My voice hardened.

“I’m done letting people control what happens here.””

I climbed the stairs.

Slowly.

Behind me, Grace stayed with Eli.

Bianca followed.

I stopped.

“You stay with him.””

She froze.

“Victor.””

“You’ve made enough decisions for my family.””

Her eyes filled with shame.

She didn’t argue.

At the top of the stairs, I saw the door.

The old office.

The room Bianca always kept locked.

Daniel stood beside it.

Smiling.

“You finally came.””

I stared at him.

“How did you get in?””

He ignored the question.

Instead, he opened the door.

Inside was not an office.

Not anymore.

The walls were covered with photographs.

Documents.

Files.

My entire life.

My company.

My family.

My marriage.

Everything.

I stepped inside.

My stomach turned.

“What is this?””

Daniel smiled.

“Insurance.””

I looked at him.

“You’ve been watching me?””

“For years.””

The answer came easily.

Too easily.

I looked at the photographs.

There were pictures of Amelia.

Pictures of Eli.

Pictures of me.

Some were taken without my knowledge.

“How long?””

Daniel walked slowly around the room.

“Long enough.””

I felt anger building.

“Why?””

He stopped beside a photograph of Eli.

“Because he was always the key.””

My blood ran cold.

“Don’t look at my son like that.””

Daniel smiled.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“The reason you’re weak.””

I stepped forward.

“You don’t know anything about me.””

“I know everything.””

He picked up a folder.

“You built an empire because you wanted security.””

He opened it.

“You lost Amelia because you trusted the wrong people.””

Another folder.

“And now you’re discovering that the one thing you thought you owned…”

He looked at me.

“…was never completely yours.””

I grabbed the folder.

Inside were medical documents.

The same documents Amelia mentioned.

My hands shook.

“What did you do?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

I looked through the pages.

Then I saw it.

A hospital form.

A signature.

A name.

Daniel Cross.

My head lifted.

“You changed the records.””

Finally, he smiled.

“Yes.””

The word echoed.

“Why?””

Daniel leaned closer.

“Because I wanted what you had.””

I stared at him.

“My family?””

“No.””

He looked toward the hallway.

“Your son.””

The room went silent.

I felt something dangerous rise inside me.

“You’re not going near Eli.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“You still don’t understand.””

He tapped the folder.

“Eli isn’t just your son.””

My jaw tightened.

“He is.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You should ask Amelia why she ran that night.””

I turned toward the door.

Amelia was standing there.

Her face was pale.

She had heard everything.

Daniel looked at her.

“Tell him.””

She said nothing.

“Tell Victor what you found.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

Then she whispered:

“The night I disappeared…”

She looked at me.

“I found out Daniel wasn’t trying to steal your company.””

A pause.

“He was trying to take Eli.””

I froze.

Daniel smiled.

“And now you know.””

The lights suddenly went out.

A second later, the emergency system activated.

Red lights flashed through the hallway.

Then my phone received one final message.

Not from Daniel.

Not from security.

From an unknown sender.

A photo appeared.

A photo of Eli.

Taken moments ago.

While he was downstairs with Grace.

May you like

Underneath it were four words:

*I HAVE HIM NOW.*
