The Seat That Was Never Hers / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11: The Letter Rachel Hid

Marcus couldn’t move.

The letter shook slightly in his hands.

Maya watched every emotion cross his face.

Shock.

Pain.

Regret.

Fear.

All of it happening in seconds.

“Dad?””

He looked at her.

Then at the letter.

Then away.

Maya’s voice became quieter.

“What does it say?””

Marcus folded the paper slightly.

Not enough to hide it.

Just enough to delay the moment.

And Maya noticed.

“Why are you doing that?””

Marcus looked at her.

“I need to understand it first.””

“No.””

Her voice surprised him.

“No more.””

The room went silent.

Maya stepped closer.

“I spent my whole life believing everyone told me the truth.””

Her eyes moved toward Vanessa.

“Then today I find out that wasn’t true.””

Then toward Angela.

“You knew things.””

Then back to Marcus.

“And you knew things.””

She touched the letter.

“So whatever is on that paper…”

She swallowed.

“I deserve to know.””

Marcus looked at his daughter.

And this time, he didn’t argue.

He unfolded the letter completely.

His voice was quiet.

“Rachel wrote this to me.””

He began reading.

“Marcus…”

He stopped.

His eyes filled.

Then he continued.

“If you are reading this, something went wrong.””

Nobody spoke.

“She knew.””

Angela whispered.

Marcus kept reading.

“Derrick found out about Maya.””

Maya froze.

Jordan looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus kept going.

“He wanted something from me. Something I built. Something I owned.””

He looked confused.

“Rachel says…”

His voice faded.

Maya waited.

“What?””

Marcus looked up.

“Rachel says you weren’t his target.””

“Who?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“She was.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“What?””

Marcus looked down again.

“Rachel wrote that Derrick discovered Vanessa was helping him.””

The entire room froze.

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Marcus continued.

“She says Vanessa didn’t understand what she was involved in.””

Angela looked surprised.

“What?””

Marcus read more.

“Rachel believed Vanessa was being manipulated.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Like she had been punched.

“She knew?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Rachel knew.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

For the first time, Maya saw genuine pain on her face.

Not anger.

Not control.

Pain.

Marcus kept reading.

“She wrote that she was afraid Derrick would hurt anyone who knew the truth.””

He stopped.

Maya whispered:

“What truth?””

Marcus looked at the letter.

Then at her.

“The truth about your birth.””

Maya felt cold.

“My birth?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

Rachel’s words continued.

“Your daughter is innocent. She cannot know why Derrick wants her gone.””

Maya stared.

“Why would he want me gone?””

Nobody answered.

Marcus read the next line.

Then he stopped.

His expression changed.

“What?””

Angela stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

Marcus looked at her.

“It says Rachel discovered something about Derrick.””

“What?””

Marcus’s voice lowered.

“She found out he wasn’t trying to take my company.””

Silence.

“He was trying to take control of something else.””

Maya waited.

“Something connected to me.””

Marcus looked at her.

“To you.””

The room went quiet.

Maya felt her heartbeat.

“What?””

Marcus looked devastated.

“I don’t know.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“I do.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus stared.

“You know?””

Vanessa looked at Maya.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“Then what did you know?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I knew Rachel was hiding something about Maya.””

Maya stepped back.

“About me?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She told me once.””

“When?””

“Before she died.””

Maya shook her head.

“So you knew my mother?””

“Yes.””

“And you knew she left something?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Yes.””

Maya’s voice broke.

“Then why did you treat me like I didn’t belong?””

Vanessa had no answer.

Because there was no answer that could fix thirteen years of hurt.

Marcus looked at his wife.

“You knew Rachel’s message was for Maya.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Yes.””

“Why hide it?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Because Derrick threatened me.””

Nobody spoke.

Marcus stared.

“He threatened you?””

She nodded.

“He told me if I told you anything, Maya would lose everything.””

Maya frowned.

“Lose what?””

Vanessa looked at the key.

“The thing Rachel protected.””

Angela suddenly gasped.

“The account.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus looked at her.

“What account?””

Angela looked horrified.

“I thought Rachel told you.””

Marcus shook his head.

“She didn’t.””

Angela stared at Maya.

“Your mother created something for you.””

Maya’s breathing slowed.

“What?””

Angela whispered:

“A trust.””

Marcus frowned.

“A trust?””

Angela nodded.

“Rachel knew Derrick wanted control of your company shares. So before she died, she moved everything connected to your name.””

Maya looked confused.

“I don’t understand.””

Angela looked at her.

“Your mother didn’t leave you money.””

A pause.

“She left you ownership.””

The room went silent.

Marcus stared.

“Ownership of what?””

Angela looked toward the letter.

“Of the one thing Derrick could never get.””

Marcus waited.

Angela whispered:

“Your father’s company.””

Nobody moved.

Then Marcus’s phone rang again.

This time, everyone saw the name.

Not unknown.

Not hidden.

A saved contact.

A name Marcus had deleted years ago.

*Derrick.*

Marcus answered.

No one spoke.

Then Derrick said:

“You read the letter.””

Marcus’s eyes hardened.

“How did you know?””

Derrick laughed.

“Because Vanessa was never the only one watching.””

Maya felt a chill.

Marcus looked around the kitchen.

Then Derrick said:

“Now that Maya knows who she really is…”

A pause.

“Tell her the rest.””

Marcus gripped the phone.

“What rest?””

Derrick’s voice lowered.

“The part where Rachel wasn’t killed because of me.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus whispered:

“Then why?””

May you like

Derrick answered:

“Because someone in that kitchen wanted her silent.””
