The Seat That Was Never Hers / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5: The Meeting at Noon

Nobody moved.

Marcus held Vanessa’s phone in his hand.

The message glowed against the screen.

A simple sentence.

A simple time.

But it changed everything.

“The meeting is still scheduled for noon.””

His voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Give me my phone.””

Marcus didn’t.

“Who are you meeting?””

“It’s not what you think.””

“That’s becoming your favorite sentence.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“Marcus.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You don’t get to say my name like that and pretend everything is normal.””

Maya watched her father.

She had seen him angry before.

But this wasn’t anger.

This was disappointment.

And somehow, that was worse.

Jordan slowly sat back down.

“What meeting?””

Nobody answered him.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Who?””

She looked toward the hallway.

Then toward the front door.

Like she was calculating her next move.

Marcus noticed.

“Don’t.””

Vanessa stopped.

“Don’t what?””

“Don’t leave.””

She gave a small smile.

“You can’t tell me what to do.””

“No.””

Marcus placed the phone on the table.

“But I can ask why you’re trying to remove my daughter from her own home.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You keep making this about Maya.””

Marcus stared.

“Because it is about Maya.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“It’s about you.””

That caught everyone’s attention.

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

“You think I’m the villain because I’m trying to protect our future.””

“Our future?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa’s voice grew stronger.

“You built everything. The company. The house. The life everyone admires.””

She pointed around the kitchen.

“Do you think people don’t notice what you have?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

“You think everyone loves you because you’re a good man?””

Maya felt a chill.

Where was Vanessa going?

Vanessa continued.

“People see opportunities, Marcus.””

Jordan looked uncomfortable.

“Vanessa…”

She ignored him.

“And I have spent years protecting what belongs to us.””

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“What belongs to us?””

“Yes.””

“The house?””

She didn’t respond.

“The money?””

Still nothing.

Marcus’s voice lowered.

“Or my daughter?””

Vanessa looked at Maya.

And Maya understood.

The look was enough.

She hugged herself.

Marcus immediately stepped closer to his daughter.

“Don’t.””

Vanessa looked away.

“I never wanted this conversation.””

“No,” Marcus said.

“You wanted me to sign something without asking questions.””

Vanessa’s silence was an answer.

Marcus grabbed his jacket from the chair.

Maya looked surprised.

“Dad?””

“I’m not leaving.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“I’m going somewhere.””

“Where?””

“To find out the truth.””

Vanessa moved toward him.

“Marcus, wait.””

He stopped.

The desperation in her voice surprised everyone.

A few seconds ago, she was confident.

Now she looked like she was losing control.

“You don’t understand what happens if you do that.””

Marcus turned.

“What happens?””

Vanessa looked at him.

And for the first time, she seemed genuinely afraid.

“I’m trying to save you.””

“From what?””

She didn’t answer.

Marcus stepped closer.

“From what, Vanessa?””

The silence stretched.

Then Maya’s phone rang.

Everyone turned.

Maya looked down.

Her face changed.

Marcus noticed.

“What is it?””

She hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

The number wasn’t saved.

But the name appearing on the screen made her blood run cold.

Because it wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone she knew.

Someone who had been inside their house.

Someone who had smiled at her during family dinners.

Maya slowly showed the screen to her father.

Marcus read the name.

His expression changed.

“Why is she calling you?””

Maya looked confused.

“I don’t know.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“Don’t answer it.””

Everyone looked at her.

Marcus noticed immediately.

“How do you know who it is?””

Vanessa froze.

Maya’s phone kept ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Then at the phone.

Then back at Vanessa.

“Who is calling my daughter?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Marcus, you need to listen to me.””

The phone stopped ringing.

Then, seconds later, a voicemail notification appeared.

Marcus picked up the phone.

The message preview appeared.

May you like

And only five words were visible:

*I know what Vanessa did.*
