Chapter 14: The Promise to Rachel
Jordan sat down slowly.
The confidence he had forced himself to carry disappeared.
He looked younger now.
Not a teenager trying to protect everyone.
Just a boy who had been holding a secret too heavy for too long.
Marcus stood across from him.
“Why?””
Jordan looked up.
“Why did Rachel trust you?””
The question hurt.
Jordan looked at Maya.
“I didn’t want this.””
Maya folded her arms.
“Then tell us.””
Jordan nodded.
“I was ten when I found the first letter.””
Marcus frowned.
“Ten?””
Jordan nodded.
“It was after Mom’s funeral.””
Maya looked confused.
“Mom?””
Jordan looked down.
“I mean… my mom.””
The room became quiet.
Jordan continued.
“I found it because I was looking for pictures.””
He looked at Marcus.
“Dad, you had boxes everywhere.””
Marcus remembered.
The old storage room.
The years of things he never unpacked.
Jordan continued.
“I found Rachel’s name.””
Maya listened.
“And I knew she was important because every time someone mentioned her, everyone got quiet.””
Marcus looked away.
“So you read it.””
Jordan nodded.
“I was a kid.””
His voice cracked.
“I didn’t understand everything.””
“What did it say?”” Marcus asked.
Jordan hesitated.
“That Maya was going to need someone.””
Maya’s expression softened slightly.
Jordan looked at her.
“Rachel wrote that you were going to grow up surrounded by people who loved you.””
A pause.
“But she was afraid someone would make you feel like you didn’t belong.””
Maya looked down.
Jordan continued.
“She said if I ever found the truth, I needed to make sure you knew one thing.””
“What?””
Jordan swallowed.
“She said you were never the secret.””
The words hit Maya harder than she expected.
Jordan’s eyes filled.
“The secret was the people trying to control your life.””
Nobody spoke.
Marcus looked at Jordan.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Jordan looked at his father.
“Because Rachel didn’t trust you.””
The words were painful.
Marcus flinched.
“Why?””
Jordan looked at Vanessa.
Then back at Marcus.
“Because she thought you would forgive the wrong person.””
Marcus went silent.
Angela whispered:
“That sounds like Rachel.””
Maya looked at the documents.
“What exactly did my mother discover?””
Jordan opened the folder.
“The company shares weren’t the only thing Derrick wanted.””
He pulled out another paper.
“He wanted control over Maya’s trust.””
Marcus frowned.
“But why?””
Jordan looked at him.
“Because the trust contained evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
Jordan answered:
“Derrick’s crimes.””
The room froze.
Marcus looked at the papers.
Rachel hadn’t just protected Maya’s future.
She had protected the truth.
Jordan continued.
“She knew Derrick was moving money. She knew he was hiding things through other people.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa looked down.
“I didn’t know everything.””
Marcus shook his head.
“But you knew enough.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.””
Maya looked at her.
“Why did you help him?””
Vanessa’s face broke.
“Because he threatened me.””
“With what?””
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
“With Jordan.””
Everyone froze.
Jordan’s face changed.
“What?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“He knew I cared about him.””
Jordan stared.
“He threatened you with me?””
She nodded.
“He said if I didn’t help him find the documents, he would destroy everything.””
Maya looked at Jordan.
“So you weren’t working with him.””
Jordan shook his head.
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I was trying to stop him.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
For the first time, anger and understanding crossed his face together.
“You should have told me.””
Vanessa whispered:
“I was ashamed.””
Before anyone could answer, the front door slammed.
Everyone turned.
A shadow moved in the hallway.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who’s there?””
No answer.
Then footsteps.
Slow.
Confident.
A man appeared at the entrance to the kitchen.
Older.
Calm.
Smiling.
Maya knew immediately.
She had never seen him before.
But she knew.
Derrick.
Marcus moved in front of Maya.
Derrick smiled.
“Still protecting her.””
Marcus’s voice was cold.
“You came into my house.””
Derrick looked around.
“Our house.””
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re done.””
Derrick laughed.
“No.””
He looked at Maya.
“I came to tell her the truth.””
Maya stepped back.
“What truth?””
Derrick smiled.
“The truth your father has been hiding.””
Marcus moved closer.
“Leave.””
Derrick ignored him.
He looked at Maya.
“Your mother didn’t die because of me.””
The room went silent.
Maya felt cold.
Derrick continued:
“She died because she found out who your real enemy was.””
Marcus’s face changed.
“Derrick.””
But he kept going.
“And that person is standing right here.””
Everyone froze.
Derrick pointed.
Not at Vanessa.
May you like
Not at Marcus.
At Angela.
