The Seat That Was Never Hers / Chapter 3 / 15

Chapter 3: The Question Nobody Wanted

Vanessa’s hand tightened around her phone.

For the first time since Marcus entered the kitchen, she looked completely unprepared.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Not in control.

Afraid.

Marcus noticed everything.

The hesitation.

The way her eyes moved toward the hallway.

The way she suddenly seemed aware of every person standing in the room.

“Vanessa,” he said quietly.

“Who sent that message?””

She placed the phone face down.

“No one important.””

Marcus let out a slow breath.

“No one important is asking if I signed something?””

Vanessa said nothing.

Maya watched her stepmother carefully.

The woman who always seemed untouchable now looked like she was searching for a way out.

Jordan moved away from the table.

“Dad…”

Marcus didn’t look away from Vanessa.

“What else don’t I know?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

“Yes.””

She stepped closer.

“You’re choosing to believe a child over your wife.””

Marcus looked at Maya.

Then back at Vanessa.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“I’m choosing to believe what I can see.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“And what exactly do you see?””

Marcus pointed toward the phone.

“A secret conversation.””

Then toward Maya.

“My daughter crying at my breakfast table.””

Then toward Jordan.

“My son scared to tell me the truth.””

Vanessa looked away.

The bright kitchen suddenly felt cold.

Maya quietly stood.

“I should go upstairs.””

Marcus immediately stopped her.

“No.””

She looked at him.

“You don’t leave because someone made you feel like you don’t belong.””

Her eyes filled again.

“But what if she’s right?””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“Maya.””

She looked at him.

“You belong wherever I am.””

The words almost broke her.

For years, Maya had tried to be easy to love.

Quiet when Vanessa was upset.

Helpful when the house felt tense.

Careful not to create problems.

But now she realized something.

The problem was never the chair.

The problem was that someone wanted her to believe she didn’t deserve one.

Vanessa picked up her coffee cup.

“This conversation is over.””

Marcus turned.

“No, it isn’t.””

She looked at him.

“You don’t get to interrogate me in my own home.””

Marcus stared.

“Your home?””

The question hung in the air.

Vanessa immediately regretted saying it.

Jordan noticed too.

Marcus slowly walked toward the kitchen island.

“Interesting choice of words.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

“It means I’m starting to wonder what exactly you think you own.””

The silence became heavier.

Then Vanessa laughed softly.

“You have no idea what’s happening.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Then explain.””

She didn’t.

Instead, she grabbed her phone and walked toward the hallway.

Marcus’s voice stopped her.

“Don’t walk away.””

Vanessa turned.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Jordan spoke.

“Dad.””

Marcus looked at him.

Jordan swallowed.

“There’s something else.””

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“Jordan.””

But he continued.

“I didn’t just record that one conversation.””

Marcus froze.

Maya looked at him.

Vanessa’s face changed completely.

“What did you record?””

Jordan reached into his backpack.

His hand disappeared inside.

Then he pulled out a small piece of paper.

Marcus took it.

He unfolded it slowly.

His eyes moved across the page.

The longer he read, the more his expression changed.

Maya stepped closer.

“Dad?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Vanessa whispered.

“Give me that.””

Marcus looked up.

“No.””

Her voice became sharper.

“Marcus, give me that paper.””

He held it tighter.

Because at the top of the page was a name he recognized.

A name he never expected to see connected to his family.

Marcus looked directly at Vanessa.

“Why is this person involved?””

Vanessa went silent.

And Maya realized the truth.

May you like

Whatever Vanessa had planned…

It was bigger than making her leave the breakfast table.
