Chapter 7: The Woman in the Photograph
“Rachel.””
The name stayed in the air.
Maya watched her father’s face carefully.
She had never seen him react to a name like that before.
Not anger.
Not confusion.
Something deeper.
Something painful.
“Dad?”” she asked softly.
Marcus didn’t answer.
His fingers closed around the small silver key.
Jordan looked between them.
“Who is Rachel?””
Vanessa looked down.
For once, she didn’t have a sharp response.
No accusation.
No excuse.
Just silence.
Marcus finally placed the key on the table.
“Where did you get this?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I told you.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“You said it explains everything. So explain.””
She looked toward Maya.
Then away.
“I didn’t know how to tell you.””
Maya felt her stomach tighten.
“Tell me what?””
Vanessa’s eyes met hers.
And for the first time, Maya saw something unexpected.
Guilt.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
Maya shook her head.
“Protecting me from what?””
Nobody answered.
Marcus walked toward the kitchen counter and leaned against it.
“Start talking.””
Vanessa took a slow breath.
“Rachel was someone from your past.””
Maya looked at her father.
“My past?””
Marcus stared at Vanessa.
“You brought her up.””
“You recognized the key.””
“That doesn’t mean you get to use her name like a weapon.””
Vanessa flinched.
Jordan looked confused.
“Dad, who is Rachel?””
Marcus closed his eyes for a moment.
Then he answered.
“Someone I knew a long time ago.””
Maya waited.
But he stopped there.
That hurt.
Because her father had always told her the truth.
At least, she thought he did.
Vanessa picked up the key.
“This belonged to Rachel.””
Marcus looked at it.
“She gave it to me.””
Maya’s eyes widened.
“She gave it to you?””
Marcus didn’t respond.
Vanessa continued.
“Before I married you, I found out things about your past.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“What things?””
“You know exactly.””
“No.””
He stepped forward.
“I don’t.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Then maybe you should ask yourself why Rachel kept this key.””
Maya felt the tension growing.
She hated not understanding.
She hated feeling like everyone was speaking around her.
“Can someone please tell me what’s happening?””
Her voice cracked.
Everyone stopped.
Marcus immediately turned toward her.
“Maya…”
“No.””
She wiped her tears.
“I keep hearing names. Papers. Meetings. Secrets.””
She pointed toward Vanessa.
“She’s been trying to make me leave.””
Then toward her father.
“And you know who Rachel is, but you won’t tell me.””
Her voice became smaller.
“What am I missing?””
Marcus looked broken.
He walked toward her.
“You’re not missing anything.””
“But everyone keeps saying that.””
She looked down.
“And it feels like everyone knows something except me.””
Marcus had no answer.
Because she was right.
Vanessa looked at Maya.
“I never wanted you to find out this way.””
Maya laughed quietly.
“Find out what?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she said:
“That your father had another family before you.””
The words hit the room.
Maya stared.
Marcus’s face changed instantly.
“Stop.””
Vanessa ignored him.
“Rachel wasn’t just someone from his past.””
“Vanessa.””
“She was someone important.””
Marcus’s voice became dangerous.
“I said stop.””
But Maya was already looking at him.
“Dad?””
Marcus looked away.
That was enough.
The silence was an answer.
Maya stepped back.
“No.””
Marcus reached for her.
“Maya, listen to me.””
She moved away.
“Who was she?””
Vanessa answered.
“Your mother.””
Everything stopped.
The clock.
The refrigerator.
The entire world.
Maya stared at Vanessa.
“My mother?””
Marcus looked devastated.
“Maya…”
“You said my mom passed away when I was little.””
“She did.””
“Then why does Vanessa know things you never told me?””
Marcus opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Jordan looked shocked.
“Wait.””
He looked at Marcus.
“You never told Maya about Rachel?””
Marcus shook his head slowly.
“I was trying to protect her.””
Vanessa whispered:
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Marcus’s face tightened.
“That’s enough.””
“No.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You let her believe a simple story because the truth was harder.””
Maya felt like the floor was moving.
She looked at her father.
“Is that true?””
Marcus’s eyes filled with regret.
“There are things about your mother that are complicated.””
Maya’s voice trembled.
“I’m thirteen, Dad. I can handle the truth.””
Marcus looked at her.
The sentence broke something inside him.
Before he could answer, the front door suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman’s voice came from the hallway.
“Marcus?””
Nobody moved.
Maya recognized the voice.
She had heard it before.
The woman stepped into the kitchen.
Angela.
Vanessa’s friend.
The person who had left the voicemail.
She looked at the faces around the table.
Then at the key in Marcus’s hand.
Her expression changed.
“Oh no.””
Marcus stared.
“You.””
Angela looked nervous.
“I didn’t want it to happen like this.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You know Rachel.””
Angela looked at Maya.
Then back at Marcus.
“Yes.””
Maya felt her chest tighten.
Angela whispered:
“And I know why Vanessa wanted those papers signed before you found out.””
Marcus’s face darkened.
“Why?””
Angela looked at Vanessa.
Then said:
“Because Rachel left something behind.””
The entire kitchen froze.
“What?”” Marcus asked.
May you like
Angela took a breath.
“Something that was supposed to belong to Maya.””
