The Seat That Was Never Hers / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6: The Secret Witness

The voicemail notification sat on Maya’s phone like a warning.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody breathed.

The bright kitchen that had felt warm only an hour earlier now felt like a courtroom.

Everyone had something to hide.

Everyone except Maya.

Marcus looked at the screen.

“Who is this?””

Maya shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Vanessa immediately answered.

“She’s lying.””

The room went silent.

Maya looked hurt.

“What?””

Vanessa realized what she had said.

“I mean…”

Marcus turned toward her.

“You just said she’s lying.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I know the person.””

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

Marcus picked up Maya’s phone.

“I’m playing the message.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“No.””

Marcus stopped.

The single word carried more fear than anything she had said before.

“Why?””

Vanessa’s eyes moved around the room.

“Because it will make things worse.””

Marcus stared.

“You’re afraid of a voicemail?””

She said nothing.

Marcus pressed play.

A woman’s voice filled the kitchen.

“Hi, Maya. I know this is scary, but you need to hear me.””

Maya’s eyes widened.

The voice sounded familiar.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell your father sooner.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She looked down.

The voice continued.

“Vanessa has been meeting with someone behind Marcus’s back.””

Maya covered her mouth.

Jordan looked shocked.

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“Who?””

The voicemail continued.

“She’s been trying to change things legally. I found out because I saw the documents.””

A pause.

Then:

“Please don’t let her convince Marcus to sign anything.””

The message ended.

Nobody spoke.

Marcus slowly lowered the phone.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“Who was that?””

Vanessa remained silent.

“Who?””

Finally, she whispered.

“Angela.””

Maya’s eyes widened.

“Your friend?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Yes.””

The woman who had hosted their holiday dinners.

The woman who always complimented Maya’s hair.

The woman who had hugged Marcus and called him family.

Marcus stared at his wife.

“Even your friends know?””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“She doesn’t know the whole story.””

“Then tell me the whole story.””

“I can’t.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“You can’t?””

Vanessa’s voice cracked slightly.

“Not here.””

Maya looked between them.

“Why not here?””

Vanessa looked at her.

For a second, Maya thought she saw regret.

Then it disappeared.

“I never wanted you hurt.””

Maya laughed softly.

A painful sound.

“But I am.””

That sentence silenced everyone.

Marcus looked at his daughter.

Then back at Vanessa.

“You made her feel like she wasn’t family.””

Vanessa didn’t respond.

“You planned something involving my lawyer.””

Silence.

“You had a meeting scheduled behind my back.””

Silence.

“And now another person is warning my daughter about you.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I don’t know what happened to the woman I married.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled slightly.

But Maya couldn’t tell if it was sadness or anger.

“You think I’m the enemy.””

Marcus answered immediately.

“Right now, I think you’re hiding something.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“And if I am?””

Nobody expected the question.

Marcus went still.

Maya felt her heartbeat speed up.

Vanessa continued.

“What if there is something you don’t know?””

Marcus stared.

“Then tell me.””

She looked at Maya.

Then Jordan.

Then back at Marcus.

“I need to show you something.””

She walked toward the hallway.

Marcus didn’t move.

“Where?””

“My office.””

“No.””

Vanessa stopped.

“You don’t trust me?””

Marcus looked at the phone in his hand.

“Not enough to follow you into another room.””

Jordan looked down.

Maya stayed close to her father.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Then reached into her robe pocket.

She pulled out a small key.

“I was hoping you would never see this.””

Marcus watched her.

“What is it?””

Vanessa held the key tightly.

“Something that explains everything.””

She walked back to the table and placed it down.

A tiny silver key.

Nothing special.

Until Marcus noticed the engraving.

His face changed.

Because he recognized it.

Maya saw his reaction.

“Dad?””

Marcus picked up the key.

His fingers tightened.

“This belonged to…”

He stopped.

Vanessa looked at him.

Waiting.

Marcus stared at the key like it had opened a door he had spent years keeping locked.

Then he whispered a name Maya had never heard before.

“Rachel.””

The kitchen went completely silent.

Jordan looked confused.

Maya looked at her father.

“Who is Rachel?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Because Vanessa already knew.

May you like

And the fear on her face said one thing clearly.

Rachel was the secret nobody wanted Maya to discover.
