Chapter 13: The Truth Jordan Carried
The name echoed through the kitchen.
“Jordan.””
The teenager froze.
His hand tightened around the edge of the wooden chair.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Maya stared at her brother.
Because that was what she had always called him.
Her brother.
The boy who sat beside her at family dinners.
The boy who helped her with homework.
The boy who secretly recorded Vanessa because he wanted to protect her.
But now Marcus was looking at him like he was seeing a stranger.
“Dad,” Jordan said quietly.
Marcus held the card.
“Why is your name on this?””
Jordan looked at the floor.
And that was the answer.
Maya’s heart sank.
“Jordan?””
He looked at her.
The pain on his face was immediate.
“Maya…”
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“Please don’t say my name like that.””
Jordan swallowed.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Find out what?””
Jordan looked at his father.
“That I knew.””
The room went silent.
Marcus stared.
“Knew what?””
Jordan took a slow breath.
“Everything.””
Maya felt her chest tighten.
“Everything?””
Jordan nodded.
“I didn’t know all of it at first.””
Marcus’s voice hardened.
“Start talking.””
Jordan looked terrified.
Not of Marcus.
Of hurting Maya.
“I found Rachel’s files last year.””
Marcus froze.
“Where?””
“In the storage room.””
Vanessa looked up.
“The locked one?””
Jordan nodded.
“You knew?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I knew there were things there.””
Marcus looked between them.
“You both knew.””
The disappointment in his voice hurt everyone.
Jordan stood.
“I wasn’t trying to hide it.””
Marcus laughed quietly.
“You literally just said you knew everything.””
“I was trying to protect Maya.””
Maya looked at him.
“By lying to me?””
Jordan looked away.
“I thought I was doing the right thing.””
“That’s what everyone says.””
Her voice cracked.
“Everyone says they’re protecting me.””
Jordan stepped closer.
“I was.””
Maya shook her head.
“No.””
She pointed toward the card.
“You were protecting the truth from me.””
Jordan had no answer.
Marcus looked at his son.
“What did Rachel leave?””
Jordan hesitated.
Then he reached into his backpack.
He pulled out a small folder.
Everyone stared.
Maya whispered:
“You had that the whole time?””
Jordan nodded.
“I was waiting.””
“For what?””
Jordan looked at her.
“For when you were ready.””
Maya’s eyes filled.
“I never got to decide if I was ready.””
That sentence broke him.
Jordan slowly placed the folder on the table.
“I’m sorry.””
Marcus opened it.
Inside were documents.
Old photographs.
Letters.
Records.
Everything connected to Rachel’s final months.
Marcus flipped through the pages.
Then stopped.
His face changed.
“What?””
Angela moved closer.
“What did you find?””
Marcus looked up.
“This isn’t about the company.””
Everyone waited.
“What is it?””
Marcus held up a document.
“This is about Maya’s identity.””
Maya frowned.
“My identity?””
Jordan spoke quietly.
“Rachel discovered something before she died.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You knew?””
Jordan nodded.
“She found out Maya wasn’t just protected by the trust.””
A pause.
“She was the reason the trust existed.””
Maya shook her head.
“I don’t understand.””
Marcus looked through the documents again.
Then his eyes stopped.
A birth record.
A legal agreement.
A name.
His face went pale.
“No.””
Vanessa whispered:
“What?””
Marcus looked at Maya.
“Maya…”
She waited.
“What?””
He couldn’t say it.
Angela took the paper.
Then she read it.
Her expression changed.
“She knew.””
Maya looked between them.
“Who knew what?””
Angela handed the paper to her.
Maya looked down.
At first, the words meant nothing.
Then they did.
And the world seemed to tilt.
The document was not about money.
Not about the company.
Not about inheritance.
It was a legal confirmation.
A truth hidden since the day she was born.
Maya looked up slowly.
“Dad?””
Marcus couldn’t meet her eyes.
“Your mother wanted to tell you herself.””
“But she couldn’t.””
“No.””
Maya’s voice became smaller.
“Why?””
Marcus looked toward the window.
“Because she was afraid someone would use it against you.””
Jordan stepped closer.
“Maya.””
She looked at him.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Jordan’s eyes filled.
“Because I promised Rachel.””
Maya froze.
“What?””
Jordan looked at Marcus.
“I found a letter addressed to me.””
Marcus looked shocked.
“To you?””
Jordan nodded.
“Rachel knew I would find the files someday.””
Maya stared.
“My mother wrote to you?””
Jordan looked down.
“She wrote because she trusted me.””
The words hurt.
Not because Jordan had betrayed her.
Because Maya realized how many people had been carrying pieces of her life.
Everyone except her.
Marcus picked up the final document.
And then he saw something.
A signature.
A signature that made him step back.
“No.””
Maya looked at him.
“What?””
Marcus looked toward Vanessa.
“You signed this.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Jordan looked at her.
“You knew.””
Vanessa whispered:
“I didn’t have a choice.””
Marcus stared.
“You signed the document that hid Maya’s truth.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I was trying to keep her alive.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Marcus’s phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
From Derrick.
Only one sentence.
*You found the truth. Now ask Jordan why Rachel trusted him instead of you.*
Marcus slowly looked at Jordan.
May you like
The teenager closed his eyes.
Because he knew the next secret was the one he had been trying hardest to hide.
