Chapter 8: What Rachel Left Behind
Nobody spoke after Angela’s words.
Something that was supposed to belong to Maya.
The sentence repeated in her mind.
Maya looked at her father.
Then Vanessa.
Then Angela.
She felt like she was standing in the middle of a conversation that started before she was even born.
“What did my mother leave?””
Her voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
Angela looked at Marcus.
He didn’t answer.
So Maya asked again.
“What did she leave?””
Marcus rubbed his face.
“I didn’t know how to explain.””
Maya’s eyes filled.
“That’s what everyone says.””
Her voice shook.
“I didn’t know how to explain.””
She looked at Vanessa.
“You didn’t know how to explain.””
She looked at Angela.
“Everyone knows something.””
Then back at Marcus.
“But nobody thinks I deserve the truth.””
Marcus immediately stepped closer.
“That’s not true.””
“Then prove it.””
The words stopped him.
Angela looked uncomfortable.
She had come into the house expecting a confrontation.
Not a daughter demanding answers from her father.
Marcus looked at the table.
Then at the key.
Finally, he made a decision.
“Rachel and I weren’t together long.””
Maya listened carefully.
“But she was important.””
He paused.
“When she found out she was pregnant with you, everything changed.””
Maya’s breathing slowed.
She had imagined this moment so many times.
Hearing stories about her mother.
But never like this.
Marcus continued.
“Rachel was smart. Strong. She didn’t trust people easily.””
Angela nodded.
“That was Rachel.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You knew her well.””
Angela looked down.
“She was my best friend.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Maya noticed.
“You knew my mother?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Marcus looked at her.
“You knew?””
Vanessa finally spoke.
“Yes.””
The room became quiet.
“How?””
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
“Before I met you, I knew Angela.””
Angela looked at her.
“That’s not how it happened.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“Not now.””
“No.””
Angela shook her head.
“Now is exactly when.””
Marcus looked between them.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Angela took a breath.
“Vanessa met Rachel years before she met you.””
Maya looked confused.
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
Marcus stared at Vanessa.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I was helping her.””
Angela laughed softly.
“No, you weren’t.””
Vanessa’s eyes sharpened.
“Be careful.””
Angela didn’t move.
“I spent months watching you pretend you cared about Rachel.””
Maya looked at her father.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus’s face tightened.
“Angela.””
“No.””
Angela looked at Maya.
“You deserve to know.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
Angela looked at her.
“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””
The kitchen became a battlefield.
Two women.
Two versions of the past.
And Maya caught in the middle.
Marcus raised his hand.
“Enough.””
Everyone stopped.
He looked at Angela.
“Tell me.””
Angela hesitated.
Then nodded.
“Rachel discovered something before she died.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
“She found out someone had been hiding information from her.””
Maya looked at Vanessa.
And Vanessa noticed.
“No.””
Her voice was sharp.
“Don’t look at me.””
Angela didn’t say anything.
She didn’t need to.
Marcus understood.
“Vanessa?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You’re blaming me?””
“I’m asking.””
She laughed.
A bitter laugh.
“After everything?””
Marcus stared.
Angela reached into her purse.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Maya watched as she placed it on the table.
“This was Rachel’s.””
Marcus looked at the envelope.
His hands shook slightly.
“Where did you get this?””
“She gave it to me before she died.””
The room went silent.
Maya looked at the envelope.
“My mother wrote something?””
Angela nodded.
“Yes.””
“For me?””
Angela looked at her.
“Yes.””
Maya’s heart raced.
After thirteen years, something from her mother was sitting inches away.
Something real.
Something untouched.
Marcus reached for it.
But Angela stopped him.
“Marcus.””
He looked up.
“She wanted Maya to read it when she was old enough.””
Maya stared.
“Why didn’t anyone give it to me?””
Nobody answered.
And then she realized.
The question wasn’t just about the letter.
It was about everything.
Who hid it.
Who lied.
Who decided she wasn’t ready.
Angela slowly turned toward Vanessa.
“Because someone made sure you never got the chance.””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
Marcus looked at her.
And this time, he didn’t look confused.
He looked betrayed.
“Maya,” Angela said softly.
The girl looked at her.
“Your mother left you one thing.””
Maya stepped closer.
“What?””
Angela placed her hand on the envelope.
“The truth.””
Then she looked at Marcus.
“But before you open it…”
May you like
She hesitated.
“Your father needs to tell you why Rachel was afraid.””
