Chapter 15: The Truth Rachel Wanted Heard
Nobody moved.
Angela stared at Derrick.
The shock on her face looked real.
Maya looked between them.
“No.””
Her voice was barely audible.
Derrick smiled.
“Exactly.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You’re lying.””
Derrick laughed.
“Am I?””
He pulled a small envelope from his coat.
Something old.
Something worn.
Something familiar.
Marcus saw it.
His face changed.
“Where did you get that?””
Derrick looked at him.
“Rachel gave it to me.””
Maya felt sick.
“That’s impossible.””
Derrick looked at her.
“Your mother trusted too many people.””
Angela finally spoke.
“You’re a liar.””
Derrick turned.
“Am I?””
He tossed the envelope onto the table.
Marcus caught it.
The handwriting on the front made his hands shake.
Rachel’s handwriting.
But the name written underneath wasn’t Marcus.
It was Angela.
Angela’s face went pale.
Marcus looked at her.
“What is this?””
Angela didn’t answer.
“Maya deserves the truth.””
Angela closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
“I was there.””
Everyone froze.
Marcus stared.
“There when?””
“The night Rachel died.””
Maya covered her mouth.
Marcus’s voice dropped.
“What?””
Angela looked broken.
“I should have told you.””
“Why didn’t you?””
Angela looked at Maya.
“Because Rachel made me promise.””
Maya shook her head.
“No.””
She stepped back.
“Everyone has a promise.””
Her voice cracked.
“Everyone has a reason.””
She looked at Angela.
“But I’m always the person who gets hurt.””
Angela started crying.
“Rachel was trying to protect you.””
“Then why did she leave?””
The question broke everyone.
Angela whispered:
“Because she didn’t know if she would survive.””
Silence.
Marcus stared.
“Tell me everything.””
Angela nodded.
“I met Rachel the night she discovered Derrick’s plan.””
Derrick smiled.
“You mean the night she discovered yours.””
Angela looked at him.
“You’re the one who threatened her.””
“No.””
Derrick shook his head.
“You were.””
Marcus looked confused.
“What are you talking about?””
Angela looked at the floor.
“I knew about the trust.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
“I knew Rachel had protected Maya’s future.””
Angela wiped her tears.
“And I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“That if Derrick got it, he would destroy everything.””
Marcus stared.
“So you helped him?””
Angela shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I tried to stop him.””
Derrick laughed.
“Nobody believes you.””
Angela looked at him.
“You were the one who followed Rachel.””
The room went silent.
Maya looked at Derrick.
“You lied.””
Derrick smiled.
“Did I?””
Marcus stepped closer.
“You said Rachel died because of someone in this kitchen.””
Derrick looked around.
“She did.””
Everyone waited.
Then Derrick smiled.
“Because the person who betrayed Rachel…”
He pointed at the doorway.
“At that time, was you.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
Derrick continued.
“Rachel found out you had signed papers giving me access to the company years earlier.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I never signed anything like that.””
“You did.””
“No.””
Marcus looked confused.
Derrick smiled.
“Not because you wanted to.””
A pause.
“Because Vanessa changed the documents.””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa went pale.
Marcus looked at her.
“Vanessa?””
She closed her eyes.
“I was trying to save you.””
The truth finally landed.
Not a simple betrayal.
Not a simple villain.
A chain of fear, lies, and mistakes.
Marcus looked exhausted.
Maya looked at Vanessa.
“You hurt me because you were scared.””
Vanessa cried silently.
“Yes.””
Maya nodded slowly.
“And you hurt my dad because you were trying to protect him.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.””
Maya looked at Marcus.
“And you hid everything because you thought I couldn’t handle it.””
Marcus looked at his daughter.
“Yes.””
She wiped her tears.
“Everyone decided for me.””
Nobody answered.
Because she was right.
Derrick stepped forward.
“You see?””
He smiled.
“They all failed you.””
Maya looked at him.
Then at the people around her.
Her father.
Her brother.
Vanessa.
Angela.
People who had made mistakes.
People who had lied.
But people who had also fought for her.
Maya picked up Rachel’s letter.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She held it tightly.
“My mother knew people would make mistakes.””
She looked at Derrick.
“But she also knew the truth would come out.””
Derrick’s smile faded.
Maya looked at Marcus.
“Dad.””
He looked at her.
“I don’t need you to protect me anymore.””
Marcus’s eyes filled.
“I need you to trust me.””
He nodded.
“I will.””
The police sirens sounded in the distance.
Everyone turned.
Marcus looked at Derrick.
“You called the police?””
Derrick’s expression changed.
“No.””
Angela looked at Maya.
Then smiled sadly.
“Rachel planned for this.””
Maya frowned.
“What?””
Angela pointed to the key.
“The key wasn’t just for the documents.””
She looked at the small engraving.
“It activated a message.””
Marcus looked confused.
“What message?””
Angela smiled.
“A message Rachel recorded years ago.””
Everyone stared.
A small device hidden inside the key began to light.
Then a voice filled the kitchen.
Rachel’s voice.
Maya stopped breathing.
“If you’re hearing this…”
Her mother’s voice.
After thirteen years.
“If Maya is old enough to understand this, then she finally knows the truth.””
Maya covered her mouth.
Rachel continued:
“My daughter, you were never a burden. You were never a problem. You were the reason I fought.””
Tears fell from Maya’s eyes.
Marcus closed his.
Rachel’s voice continued:
“People may lie. People may fail. But never let anyone convince you that you don’t belong.””
The kitchen stayed silent.
Because everyone finally understood.
The seat at the breakfast table was never the thing being taken away.
It was Maya’s belief that she deserved one.
May you like
And now she knew.
She always had.
