Chapter 4: The Name on the Paper
Marcus stared at the document in his hand.
The kitchen was silent except for the faint ticking sound of the clock above the refrigerator.
Maya stood beside him, trying to read his expression.
She couldn’t.
That scared her more than anger would have.
Her father was the kind of man who always had an answer. When her bike chain broke, he fixed it. When she cried after losing her first school competition, he told her one loss couldn’t define her. When she was scared of starting middle school, he sat on the edge of her bed and promised she would never face anything alone.
But now?
He looked lost.
“Dad,” Maya whispered.
“Who is it?””
Marcus didn’t respond immediately.
His eyes stayed locked on the paper.
Vanessa took one step forward.
“Marcus, you’re misunderstanding what you’re seeing.””
He slowly lifted his head.
“Am I?””
“Yes.””
“Then explain.””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Jordan watched from across the table, his face pale.
The teenager had always avoided conflict. He hated arguments. He hated watching people fight.
But even he knew something was wrong.
Marcus tapped the paper.
“This name.””
His voice was low.
“Why is my business attorney listed here?””
Vanessa’s expression shifted.
Just for a second.
But Marcus caught it.
“What?””
She looked away.
“That doesn’t mean anything.””
“It means everything.””
Marcus placed the paper flat on the table.
The document had been folded several times, like someone had hidden it quickly.
At the top was the name of Marcus’s attorney.
The same attorney who handled his company contracts.
The same attorney who had helped him build everything from nothing.
Maya looked confused.
“What does a lawyer have to do with me?””
Nobody answered.
That scared her.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Tell me.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You’re acting like I committed some crime.””
“I asked you a question.””
“And I’m saying you’re overreacting.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Overreacting?””
His voice rose slightly.
“My wife secretly talks about removing my daughter from this house, there are papers involved, and my lawyer’s name is on them.””
He pointed at the document.
“And you’re telling me I’m overreacting?””
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
“I was trying to protect this family.””
Marcus laughed once.
A cold, disappointed laugh.
“From who?””
Vanessa looked toward Maya.
The answer was obvious.
Maya felt it immediately.
Her stomach twisted.
She grabbed the edge of the table.
Marcus noticed.
“Don’t look at her like that.””
Vanessa turned back.
“I didn’t say anything.””
“You didn’t have to.””
The room went quiet.
Maya had spent years trying to understand Vanessa.
She tried buying her favorite coffee.
She tried helping with dinner.
She tried being polite even when Vanessa ignored her.
But she never understood why kindness never worked.
Now she wondered if it was because Vanessa didn’t want kindness.
She wanted control.
Jordan picked up the paper.
“Dad, there’s more.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
Jordan hesitated.
“I found it in Vanessa’s office.””
Vanessa immediately snapped.
“You went through my things?””
Jordan looked down.
“I was looking for my school project.””
“That’s not true.””
“It is.””
His voice shook.
“I saw the papers on your desk.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You had these in your office?””
Vanessa stayed silent.
That silence answered everything.
Marcus walked toward the counter and placed both hands on it.
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then:
“How long?””
Vanessa frowned.
“How long what?””
“How long have you been planning this?””
Her expression hardened.
“You’re assuming the worst.””
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“I’m asking because I already saw enough.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You don’t know everything.””
“Then tell me.””
She looked away.
Again.
Marcus noticed.
And Maya noticed too.
Every time her father asked for the truth, Vanessa looked for an escape.
A memory suddenly hit Maya.
A few weeks earlier.
Vanessa standing outside her bedroom door.
The cold voice.
The warning.
“You should be careful about getting too comfortable.””
At the time, Maya thought it was just another cruel comment.
Now she wondered if it had been a threat.
Marcus folded the paper.
“Jordan.””
The teenager looked up.
“Where exactly did you find this?””
Jordan swallowed.
“In Vanessa’s drawer.””
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“Jordan.””
He stopped.
The fear returned to his face.
Marcus noticed.
“Don’t intimidate him.””
“I’m his mother.””
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You’re his stepmother.””
The words landed heavily.
Vanessa looked wounded.
But then something changed.
The sadness disappeared.
Something colder replaced it.
“You really want to do this?””
Marcus looked at her.
“Do what?””
“Destroy everything because of her?””
She pointed toward Maya.
Maya froze.
Marcus stepped between them.
“Enough.””
Vanessa’s voice became quieter.
“You have no idea what I’ve sacrificed.””
Marcus stared.
“Then tell me.””
She didn’t.
Instead, she looked at the clock.
Then at the document.
Then back at Marcus.
And Maya noticed something.
Vanessa wasn’t scared because Marcus discovered the papers.
She was scared because he discovered them too early.
Marcus saw it too.
His face changed.
“What was supposed to happen today?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Maya?””
The girl looked at him.
“What?””
Marcus looked back at Vanessa.
“What were you planning to do today?””
Vanessa remained silent.
Then her phone buzzed again.
Everyone looked.
This time, Marcus grabbed it before she could.
The screen showed another message.
One sentence.
One name.
And a time.
Marcus read it.
Then his face went completely still.
“Vanessa…”
She looked terrified.
May you like
Because he had finally seen the message.
*The meeting is still scheduled for noon. Bring the signed papers.*
