Chapter 10: The Man My Mother Feared
The man standing in our doorway looked nothing like the person I imagined.
I expected someone dangerous to look dangerous.
A scar.
A threatening voice.
Something obvious.
But Vanessa’s brother looked calm.
That was worse.
He wore a gray coat and expensive shoes. His hair was neatly trimmed. His expression was almost polite.
Almost.
Marcus stepped forward.
“You need to leave.””
The man smiled slightly.
“I was hoping you’d say that.””
Vanessa stood behind him.
For the first time since I knew her, she looked like she wasn’t in control.
Not because she was scared.
Because she needed him.
That scared me more.
Marcus kept his body between me and them.
“Who are you?””
The man looked at him.
“Daniel Brooks.””
Evelyn’s face changed.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You always were dramatic, Evelyn.””
Marcus looked between them.
“You know him.””
Evelyn nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Then tell me why he’s in my house.””
Daniel stepped inside.
“Because nobody is listening.””
Marcus didn’t move.
“You’re not welcome.””
Daniel smiled.
“That’s interesting.””
He looked around the house.
“Because Vanessa told me this would be my family one day.””
My stomach turned.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Daniel laughed.
“She didn’t tell you everything?””
“No,” Marcus said.
“Apparently nobody does.””
Daniel walked farther inside.
Marcus immediately blocked him.
“Stop.””
Daniel looked down at him.
“You think you’re the first man Vanessa convinced she needed?””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
He looked at her.
“You wanted this.””
The room became silent.
I watched Vanessa.
She looked angry.
But not surprised.
Like this conversation had happened before.
Marcus noticed too.
“You two planned this together.””
Daniel smiled.
“Smart.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Don’t say anything else.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You’re worried now?””
His smile disappeared.
“You were never worried when you were spending her money.””
My heart stopped.
Marcus’s voice dropped.
“Say that again.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You heard me.””
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“He’s lying.””
Daniel laughed.
“You always say that when people tell the truth.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“What money?””
Daniel walked toward the table.
The documents were still there.
He picked one up.
“Your daughter’s trust.””
Marcus’s expression changed.
Daniel tapped the paper.
“She thought she could move everything slowly.””
Vanessa looked furious.
“Enough.””
But Daniel continued.
“She was good at pretending.””
Marcus turned toward Vanessa.
“How much did you know?””
Vanessa’s eyes moved.
That hesitation answered everything.
Marcus looked away.
Like he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
Daniel looked at me.
“You’re Maya, right?””
I stepped closer to my father.
“Yes.””
He studied me.
“You look like your mother.””
The room changed.
My mother.
Everyone kept bringing her name back.
Everyone knew something I didn’t.
“What did you know about my mom?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
Then at Marcus.
Then back at me.
“Your mother knew Vanessa wasn’t who she said she was.””
Vanessa’s voice became sharp.
“Don’t.””
Daniel ignored her.
“She found out before she died.””
Marcus froze.
“Found out what?””
Daniel smiled.
“That Vanessa wasn’t trying to steal from you.””
A pause.
“She was trying to replace your mother.””
My chest tightened.
Marcus stared.
“What?””
Daniel leaned against the table.
“Your wife wanted everything your mother left behind.””
“That’s insane.””
“Is it?””
Daniel pointed toward the documents.
“She entered your life after studying it.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You’re making this sound worse than it was.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Because it was worse.””
She looked at him.
“I loved you.””
Marcus’s face showed pain.
“That’s the part I don’t understand.””
Vanessa went quiet.
He continued.
“How could you love me and hurt my daughter?””
No answer.
For the first time, Vanessa had nothing.
Daniel looked satisfied.
But Evelyn stepped forward.
“This doesn’t make you innocent.””
Daniel’s smile faded.
“I never said it did.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Then why are you here?””
Daniel reached into his coat.
Everyone tensed.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I came because Vanessa made a mistake.””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“What did you do?””
Daniel looked at her.
“You kept one thing from me.””
He placed the envelope on the table.
Marcus stared at it.
“What is that?””
Daniel looked at Maya.
“Something your mother left behind.””
I felt my heartbeat in my ears.
Marcus opened it.
Inside was a single page.
He read it.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
Evelyn moved closer.
“What does it say?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Then Daniel.
Then me.
His voice was barely audible.
“It says Maya’s trust fund wasn’t created only by her mother.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus looked at the page again.
May you like
And whispered:
“Your mother had help.””
