Chapter 13: The Night My Mother Disappeared
Nobody moved.
Not Marcus.
Not Evelyn.
Not even Vanessa.
The message on the back of the photograph sat between us like a final warning from someone who had been gone for years.
*Ask Vanessa why she lied.*
My father stared at the words.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“Explain.””
Her face was pale.
“I can’t.””
The answer was quiet.
But it was enough.
Marcus took one step closer.
“You can’t?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“It’s not what you think.””
“That’s what you always say.””
His voice wasn’t loud.
That made it worse.
I had never seen him look at someone like that.
Not even when he found out about the money.
Because money could be replaced.
Trust couldn’t.
Daniel crossed his arms.
“You knew this day would come.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You were supposed to stay away.””
Daniel laughed.
“You really thought you could bury everything forever?””
Marcus looked between them.
“What happened the night my wife died?””
Vanessa looked down.
Nobody answered.
Then Evelyn spoke.
“Vanessa was the last person seen with Elena before the accident.””
My father turned.
“What?””
I looked at Evelyn.
“Why didn’t you tell Dad?””
She looked ashamed.
“Because I didn’t know the full truth.””
Marcus’s voice changed.
“You knew enough to suspect.””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
“I failed your family too.””
The room became heavy.
I watched my father.
His entire world was changing.
The woman he married.
The person he trusted.
The story he had lived with.
Everything was breaking apart.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Were you there?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
My heart stopped.
Marcus whispered:
“You were there.””
She nodded.
“I was.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at me.
Then away.
“Because Elena wanted to talk.””
“About what?””
She didn’t answer.
Marcus stepped forward.
“About Maya?””
A tear rolled down Vanessa’s face.
“Yes.””
I felt cold.
“She knew?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“She knew I wasn’t who I said I was.””
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa continued.
“Your mother found records. She found out I had been asking questions about the trust.””
Marcus stared.
“So she confronted you.””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“She told me to leave.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“And?””
“I got angry.””
The words came out like a confession.
“I told her she couldn’t control everything.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You threatened her.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Don’t pretend you’re innocent.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“What does he have to do with this?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Vanessa did.
“He helped me.””
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at her.
“You’re blaming me now?””
“You taught me how to get what I wanted.””
Marcus stared.
“How?””
Vanessa looked broken.
“You said people only protect what they value.””
My stomach turned.
“And you thought Maya’s money was valuable.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I thought I was fixing my life.””
Marcus’s voice was full of pain.
“You destroyed a child’s.””
Vanessa covered her face.
“I didn’t mean for Elena to die.””
The sentence froze everyone.
Marcus stopped breathing.
“What?””
Vanessa immediately realized what she had said.
Too late.
Evelyn whispered:
“You didn’t mean for her to die?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Why would you say that?””
Vanessa backed away.
“I need to go.””
“No.””
Marcus blocked the door.
“You’re going to tell me.””
Her eyes filled with fear.
“Marcus…”
“Tell me.””
The silence lasted several seconds.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“The argument ended.””
Marcus waited.
“She left.””
“Then?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I followed her.””
My hands became cold.
“Why?””
“Because I wanted the documents.””
Marcus looked devastated.
“You followed my wife because of paperwork?””
Vanessa started crying.
“I didn’t know what would happen.””
“What happened?””
She looked at him.
“She lost control of the car.””
Nobody moved.
Marcus whispered:
“You were there.””
“Yes.””
“Did you call for help?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
That silence was louder than any confession.
Marcus stepped back.
Like he had been hit.
“You left her.””
Vanessa cried.
“I was scared.””
“You left her.””
Her voice broke.
“I thought she was dead.””
I looked at my father.
I saw something I had never seen before.
A person realizing the past he mourned was not the past he knew.
Daniel suddenly spoke.
“She didn’t just leave.””
Everyone turned.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“She took something.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“No.””
Daniel reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small key.
“She took the key to the emergency account.””
Marcus stared.
“The second account.””
Evelyn looked horrified.
“That’s why the money disappeared.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You took the key.””
Marcus stared at Vanessa.
Then asked the question nobody wanted answered.
“What else did you take from my wife that night?””
Vanessa didn’t speak.
But her expression told us.
May you like
Something else was missing.
Something worse.
