Chapter 9: The Secret My Mother Buried

Nobody touched the box.

Not for almost a full minute.

It sat on the floor outside my bedroom door.

Small.

Ordinary.

But somehow it felt dangerous.

Marcus moved me behind him.

“Evelyn.””

“I know.””

“Tell me what we’re dealing with.””

She stared at the box.

“I don’t know.””

That answer scared me.

Because Evelyn always seemed like she knew everything.

My father slowly picked up the note again.

“What does it say?””

Evelyn looked at the paper.

Her voice was quiet.

“‘She was never supposed to find this.’”

Marcus looked at me.

My stomach dropped.

She.

Me.

The box was about me.

“Who sent it?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

Marcus’s patience disappeared.

“Who?””

She looked at him.

“Vanessa’s brother.””

My father went still.

“I didn’t know she had a brother.””

“Most people don’t.””

“Why?””

Evelyn looked toward the box.

“Because Vanessa spent years making sure nobody talked about him.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“Because he knows what she did before she met you.””

My father opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

He looked at me.

“Maya, go downstairs.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Maya.””

“I want to know.””

He looked at me.

I saw the conflict in his eyes.

He wanted to protect me.

But he also knew secrets had already hurt me.

Finally, he nodded.

“Stay with me.””

He opened the box.

Inside was a small flash drive.

And a photograph.

Marcus picked up the photograph first.

His face changed instantly.

I stepped closer.

“What is it?””

He turned it around.

The picture showed Vanessa.

Years younger.

Standing beside someone I had never seen.

A man.

Behind them was a bank office.

Evelyn took the picture.

“That’s him.””

“Her brother?””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Why would he send this?””

Evelyn picked up the flash drive.

“There’s only one way to know.””

She connected it to Marcus’s laptop.

A video appeared.

The timestamp was from six years ago.

Before Vanessa married my father.

Before I knew her.

The screen loaded.

Then Vanessa appeared.

My heart started beating faster.

She looked younger.

But it was definitely her.

She was sitting across from someone at a table.

A man’s voice came from behind the camera.

“You’re sure this will work?””

Vanessa looked confident.

“It already has.””

The video froze.

Marcus stared.

“Already has?””

Evelyn looked sick.

The video continued.

The man asked:

“And the girl?””

Vanessa answered:

“Maya won’t know anything.””

I felt my father grab my hand.

The room became silent.

The man’s voice returned.

“What about Marcus?””

Vanessa smiled.

“He trusts people too easily.””

Marcus looked away.

Like he couldn’t watch.

But he kept watching.

The video continued.

“We just need access to the accounts.””

“And then?””

Vanessa leaned back.

“Then everything belongs where it should.””

The screen flickered.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Marcus.

His face was broken.

Not angry.

Broken.

Evelyn whispered:

“She planned this before she entered your life.””

My father stood slowly.

“No.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Marcus—”

“No.””

He shook his head.

“She didn’t just use me.””

He looked at me.

“She targeted my daughter.””

A noise came from the front door.

Everyone froze.

The lock turned.

Someone was coming inside.

Marcus stepped in front of me.

“Who has a key?””

Nobody answered.

Then the door opened.

And Vanessa walked in.

But she wasn’t alone.

Standing beside her was the man from the photograph.

Her brother.

He looked at Marcus.

Then at me.

And said:

“Maya Carter.””

May you like

A pause.

“You finally found out why your mother was afraid.””
