Chapter 7: The Account Hidden Under My Name
My father didn’t speak for several seconds.
He just stood there with the phone pressed against his ear.
The boutique around us kept moving.
People walked past the displays.
A cashier folded clothes.
A child laughed somewhere near the entrance.
But for us, everything had stopped.
“Who told you about the second account?”” Marcus asked.
His voice was low.
Careful.
The kind of voice adults use when they are trying not to break.
I watched Vanessa.
She looked like she wanted to run.
The confidence she had carried all afternoon was gone.
The perfect hair.
The expensive clothes.
The polished smile.
None of it could hide the panic in her eyes.
Marcus ended the call.
“Answer me.””
Vanessa looked away.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Don’t lie now.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“You’ve been waiting for this.””
“No,” Evelyn replied.
“I’ve been waiting for Maya to be protected.””
That sentence made me look down.
Protected.
It was such a simple word.
But I realized I couldn’t remember the last time I felt that way.
Marcus turned toward Evelyn.
“What second account?””
She took a slow breath.
“The original trust fund wasn’t the only account created for Maya.””
My father frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“When Maya’s mother set everything up, she created a second account.””
“For what?””
“For emergencies.””
Evelyn looked at me.
“Your mother wanted money that nobody could touch unless Maya truly needed it.””
Marcus stared.
“So the money Vanessa took wasn’t the only thing.””
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
“There was another account.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You don’t know that.””
Evelyn looked at her.
“I know because I helped create it.””
The room became silent.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Why did you know about it?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
He stepped closer.
“Why?””
She finally looked at him.
“Because your wife told me.””
I felt my stomach twist.
Marcus froze.
“My wife trusted you?””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“She needed help.””
“With what?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“She was sick.””
Nobody moved.
Even Evelyn looked surprised.
Vanessa continued.
“She knew she wasn’t going to be around forever.””
Marcus’s face softened for a moment.
Then hardened again.
“She trusted you with her daughter.””
“Yes.””
“And you used that trust.””
Vanessa looked angry.
“I did what I had to do.””
The words shocked me.
“What you had to do?””
She looked at me.
“You think raising children is easy?””
Marcus immediately stepped between us.
“Don’t talk to her like that.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You always do that.””
“Do what?””
“Protect her.””
Marcus stared.
“She’s my daughter.””
“And what am I?””
The question hung there.
For a second, Vanessa looked almost hurt.
Almost human.
But then she looked at me.
And that feeling disappeared.
“You never wanted me.””
My heart sank.
Because somehow she made it sound like it was my fault.
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“You wanted control.””
Vanessa looked away.
Evelyn opened her folder.
“There’s something else you need to see.””
Marcus took the papers.
He read the first page.
Then the second.
Then he stopped.
“What is this?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“Your marriage documents.””
Marcus looked confused.
“My marriage documents?””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Evelyn nodded.
“Specifically, the financial agreement.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You signed a separate agreement?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“What did you hide?””
Vanessa’s voice became sharp.
“I didn’t hide anything.””
Evelyn pointed to the document.
“You listed Maya’s trust fund as a possible household asset.””
Marcus stared.
“That’s impossible.””
“It was never supposed to be touched,” Evelyn said.
My father’s hand tightened around the paper.
“You knew that.””
Vanessa looked angry now.
“I was your wife.””
“That doesn’t give you the right.””
“You think I married you for money?””
Nobody answered.
Because that wasn’t the question anymore.
The question was how much she had taken.
Marcus looked at me.
“Maya, did Vanessa ever make you sign anything?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Did she ever ask for your fingerprint?””
I hesitated.
Then whispered:
“She said it was for school papers.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Evelyn immediately looked at him.
“What?””
My father looked at me.
“When?””
“Last year.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“Maya.””
I flinched.
Marcus noticed.
“Don’t.””
The single word stopped her.
He pulled me closer.
“What else did she tell you?””
I tried to remember.
“She said I shouldn’t tell Dad because he was busy.””
Marcus looked devastated.
Busy.
That was what she had used.
She had made me think I was bothering him.
“I thought you didn’t want to hear about little things,” I whispered.
My father’s face broke.
“Maya…”
He knelt.
“I want to hear everything.””
My eyes filled.
“Everything?””
“Everything.””
A long silence passed.
Then Vanessa suddenly grabbed her purse.
“I’m leaving.””
Marcus stood.
“No.””
“You can’t keep me here.””
“I’m not.””
He pointed toward the papers.
“But you’re not taking anything else.””
Her eyes flashed.
“You have no idea what’s coming.””
Marcus stared.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa reached the door.
Then stopped.
She smiled.
Not a kind smile.
A confident one.
“The second account wasn’t the only secret your wife left behind.””
She looked directly at me.
“Your mother knew someone would try to take from you.””
Marcus went still.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa opened the door.
“I’m saying she was afraid of someone.””
The door closed behind her.
May you like
And for the first time, I wondered…
If Vanessa wasn’t the only person my mother had been afraid of.
