Chapter 6: The Woman Behind The Smile
The sentence destroyed everything.
Since before you married me.
I didn’t understand all the details.
I was nine.
But I understood one thing.
Vanessa had known.
She had known from the beginning.
Marcus stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked around.
The boutique.
The people watching.
The children.
Me.
Then she said quietly:
“Can we talk somewhere else?””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
His voice was different now.
The sadness was still there.
But something stronger had replaced it.
“You don’t get to choose where the truth comes out.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You think you know everything.””
“No.””
Marcus looked at the documents.
“But I know enough.””
She grabbed one of the shopping bags.
“You’re ruining everything because of a piece of paper.””
I looked at the bags.
The expensive clothes.
The new shoes.
The things she bought while telling me we had to save money.
Marcus noticed too.
“This isn’t about a piece of paper.””
He pointed toward me.
“This is about my daughter believing she wasn’t worth anything.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Maya, tell him.””
I froze.
“Tell him what?””
“That I took care of you.””
My mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Because there were moments when Vanessa had been kind.
But there were also moments like today.
Moments that hurt.
Marcus saw my hesitation.
“Maya, you can tell the truth.””
I whispered:
“She used to be nice.””
Vanessa smiled slightly.
“See?””
I continued.
“But then she stopped.””
The smile disappeared.
“She said I was expensive.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“What?””
I stared at the floor.
“She said I ate too much.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Maya—”
“She said my mom left money, but I didn’t need to know about it.””
Marcus looked like he had been punched.
Evelyn quietly looked away.
Giving us privacy.
Vanessa’s voice became softer.
“I was trying to teach you responsibility.””
Marcus answered immediately.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You were teaching her shame.””
The words made Vanessa angry.
She stepped forward.
“You have no idea how hard it is being a stepmother.””
Marcus didn’t move.
“You’re right.””
A pause.
“I don’t.””
Then he looked at me.
“But I know how hard it is being a child who thinks nobody is protecting her.””
Vanessa looked away.
For the first time, she had no response.
Marcus’s phone buzzed.
He checked it.
His expression changed.
“What?””
I looked up.
“What happened?””
He showed Evelyn the screen.
She read it.
Then became serious.
“The bank responded?””
Marcus nodded.
“They confirmed the withdrawal records.””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“What records?””
Marcus looked at her.
“The records connected to Maya’s trust fund.””
Her breathing changed.
“What did they say?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
He folded the phone away.
That scared Vanessa more.
“You can’t hide things from me.””
Marcus stared at her.
“That’s interesting coming from you.””
Jordan quietly stepped forward.
“Mom…”
Vanessa looked at him.
“What?””
He looked at Maya.
Then back at his mother.
“Are we wearing things that belonged to her?””
Nobody answered.
And that silence hurt more than anything.
Vanessa walked toward the exit.
“I’m leaving.””
Marcus blocked the door.
“No.””
She glared.
“Move.””
“No.””
Her voice lowered.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.””
Marcus looked at her.
“I know exactly what I’m doing.””
Then he looked at the letter from my mother.
“And I know I should have listened sooner.””
My eyes filled with tears.
Because that was the first time anyone admitted they should have seen me.
Marcus reached down and held my hand.
“We’re going home.””
Vanessa laughed quietly.
“Home?””
She looked at me.
“You really think this is over?””
Marcus tightened his grip.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
She reached into her purse.
Pulled out her phone.
And typed something.
A few seconds later, Marcus’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
I watched him answer.
“Hello?””
A voice spoke on the other end.
I couldn’t hear the words.
But I saw my father’s expression disappear.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
And whispered:
“You already knew about the second account.””
Vanessa froze.
Marcus looked down at me.
May you like
And for the first time that day…
I saw fear in my father’s eyes.
