The Shoes That Were Never Mine / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14: The Truth My Father Deserved

The next morning, the house didn’t feel like home.

It felt like a place where secrets had been hiding in the walls.

Marcus sat at the kitchen table with every document spread out in front of him.

Bank records.

Letters.

Photographs.

Proof of everything we had uncovered.

I sat beside him.

For the first time in weeks, he didn’t rush to hide the pain on his face.

He let me see it.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“You already said that.””

“I know.””

He looked at the papers.

“But I need you to hear it again.””

I waited.

“I should have noticed.””

I shook my head.

“Dad…”

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I was so focused on keeping everything together that I didn’t see you were hurting.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because part of me wanted to tell him it was okay.

But another part still remembered standing alone in that boutique.

Marcus reached over and held my hand.

“I promise you something.””

“What?””

“From now on, nobody gets to make you feel invisible.””

I nodded.

Then the doorbell rang.

Marcus immediately stood.

His protective side returned.

But when he opened the door, it wasn’t Vanessa.

It was Elena.

My grandmother.

For a moment, nobody moved.

She looked older than the photograph.

But the eyes were the same.

My mother’s eyes.

She looked at me.

And started crying.

“Maya.””

My name sounded different coming from her.

Like she had been waiting years to say it.

I looked at Marcus.

He nodded.

“It’s okay.””

Elena stepped inside slowly.

“I’m sorry.””

The first words she said.

Not hello.

Not a question.

An apology.

“For what?””

She looked at me.

“For losing so much time.””

My throat tightened.

“You didn’t leave?””

Her face broke.

“No.””

A tear fell.

“I fought to find you.””

I looked at Marcus.

He looked away.

Like he already knew.

Elena sat down.

“Your mother found out Vanessa was trying to access the trust.””

I listened.

“She contacted me because she was afraid.””

“Afraid of Vanessa?””

Elena nodded.

“But also afraid of what Vanessa might do if she felt trapped.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Elena looked heartbroken.

“Because Vanessa convinced everyone I was unstable after Elena died.””

She swallowed.

“She told people I was grieving and confused.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“She lied.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Elena.

“Why didn’t you come for me?””

She reached for my hand.

“I tried.””

Her voice shook.

“But Vanessa had already changed everything.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

“She had documents showing she was your legal guardian.””

My father looked shocked.

“That’s impossible.””

“It was fake.””

The room became quiet.

Elena continued.

“I spent years trying to prove it.””

I looked down.

“So everyone knew except me.””

Elena squeezed my hand.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“You were the only innocent person.””

Those words stayed with me.

Because for years, I thought I was the problem.

Now I realized I had been surrounded by people hiding the truth.

Marcus’s phone rang.

He checked it.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He listened.

Then looked at Elena.

“The police found Vanessa.””

My heart jumped.

“Where?””

Marcus looked serious.

“She turned herself in.””

Nobody spoke.

Then his phone buzzed again.

A message appeared.

He read it.

And his face changed.

“What is it?””

He handed the phone to Elena.

She read the message.

Then closed her eyes.

“She finally told them.””

“Told them what?”” Marcus asked.

Elena looked at me.

May you like

And whispered:

“The truth about the night your mother died.””
