Chapter 11: The Name Written In My Mother’s Letter

Nobody spoke after my father said those words.

Your mother had help.

I didn’t know why that sentence felt so important.

But everyone else did.

Evelyn looked at the letter.

“Let me see.””

Marcus handed it to her.

She read it carefully.

Then sat down.

“I knew it.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You knew?””

“Not everything.””

She looked at the paper.

“But I suspected.””

Daniel crossed his arms.

“Your mother wasn’t alone.””

Marcus looked frustrated.

“Stop talking in pieces.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because the truth is complicated.””

Marcus’s voice hardened.

“My daughter has spent years being treated like she didn’t matter. I think she deserves the whole truth.””

Daniel looked at me.

For a moment, his expression softened.

Then he nodded.

“Your mother created the trust with someone she trusted completely.””

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“Her father.””

I blinked.

“My grandfather?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Yes.””

I knew almost nothing about him.

My mother rarely talked about her family.

I thought they were gone.

Evelyn explained.

“Your grandfather was a businessman. He knew people would try to take advantage of your mother after she became ill.””

Marcus looked at the letter.

“So he created protections.””

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“And Vanessa spent years trying to break them.””

Vanessa finally spoke.

“Enough.””

Everyone turned.

She looked exhausted.

“I made mistakes.””

Marcus stared.

“Mistakes?””

She looked at him.

“I was trying to secure a future.””

“For who?””

She didn’t answer.

Because the answer was obvious.

Not me.

Not my future.

Hers.

Jordan and Ava appeared at the doorway.

I hadn’t noticed them come in.

They looked scared.

“Mom?””

Vanessa turned.

“What are you doing here?””

Jordan looked at Marcus.

“Is everything true?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Go upstairs.””

“No.””

The word surprised everyone.

Jordan looked at her.

“I want to know.””

Ava stood beside him.

“Me too.””

Vanessa stared at them.

“You don’t understand.””

Jordan shook his head.

“You said Maya was lucky because she had Dad.””

He looked at me.

“But you took from her.””

Vanessa looked hurt.

“Jordan.””

He stepped back.

“I thought you were better than that.””

Those words affected her more than anything Marcus had said.

Because they came from her own child.

She looked away.

Daniel picked up the envelope again.

“There’s still one thing.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What?””

“The person who helped your mother set up the trust.””

He paused.

“Wasn’t your grandfather.””

Everyone looked confused.

Evelyn frowned.

“But the documents—”

“Were signed through him.””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“But the money came from somewhere else.””

My father stared.

“Where?””

Daniel looked at me.

Then said:

“From someone who never wanted Maya to know they existed.””

My skin felt cold.

“Who?””

Daniel reached into his pocket.

He pulled out an old photograph.

He placed it on the table.

Marcus picked it up.

His face changed.

I stepped closer.

The picture showed my mother.

Standing beside another woman.

A woman I had never seen.

But the resemblance was impossible to miss.

Same eyes.

Same smile.

Same face shape.

I looked at Marcus.

“Who is she?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he looked like he knew.

Evelyn whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

Marcus turned the photograph over.

There was writing on the back.

A name.

His hands started shaking.

“What?””

He read it silently.

Then showed it to Evelyn.

She covered her mouth.

“No.””

I looked at the name.

I didn’t recognize it.

But everyone else did.

Daniel said quietly:

“Maya…”

I looked at him.

“That woman is your grandmother.””

The room went silent.

I stared.

“But my grandmother is dead.””

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

“No.””

May you like

His voice broke.

“She isn’t.””
