Chapter 8: The Person My Mother Trusted

The ride home was silent.

Not normal silence.

Heavy silence.

The kind where everyone has questions but nobody knows which one to ask first.

I sat in the back seat.

Marcus drove.

Evelyn sat beside him, holding the folder against her chest.

Every few minutes, my father looked at me through the mirror.

Like he needed to make sure I was still there.

Like he was afraid I would disappear.

When we reached the house, Marcus turned off the engine.

Nobody moved.

Finally, he said:

“We’re going inside.””

I opened my door.

But before I could step out, Marcus stopped me.

“Maya.””

I looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

My throat tightened.

“For what?””

He looked down.

“For not seeing it.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because part of me wanted to say it was okay.

But another part of me knew it wasn’t.

So I just whispered:

“I missed my mom.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“No one talks about her.””

His face changed.

“You’re right.””

He took a breath.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

I looked at him.

“But you were alone.””

The words hurt him.

Because they were true.

Inside the house, everything looked normal.

The same couch.

The same pictures.

The same walls.

But I couldn’t look at it the same way anymore.

Marcus placed the documents on the dining table.

Evelyn opened the folder.

“There’s something you need to understand.””

Marcus sat down.

“What?””

“Your wife didn’t just take money.””

My hands went cold.

“What else?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“She tried to change who had control over it.””

Marcus frowned.

“She tried to become Maya’s legal guardian?””

“No.””

Evelyn paused.

“She tried to make it look like Maya had chosen her.””

My father stood.

“What?””

Evelyn pulled out another document.

“This was submitted eighteen months ago.””

Marcus looked at the paper.

His face changed.

“Signature verification?””

“Yes.””

He looked at me.

“Maya, did you sign this?””

I shook my head immediately.

“No.””

Evelyn nodded.

“That’s what I thought.””

Marcus looked furious.

“She forged her signature?””

“We need experts to confirm.””

“But you suspect it.””

“Yes.””

The room felt colder.

Marcus sat back down.

I watched him.

He looked tired.

Older.

Like the day had taken years from him.

“Why?”” he whispered.

Evelyn answered softly.

“Because money changes people.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Not just money.””

He looked at me.

“This was about my daughter.””

A sound came from upstairs.

A door closing.

We all looked up.

I froze.

“Someone is here?””

Marcus stood immediately.

He motioned for me to stay behind him.

“Don’t move.””

He walked toward the stairs.

Every step sounded louder.

Evelyn followed.

At the top of the stairs, Marcus stopped.

The hallway was empty.

Then he saw it.

A small box sitting outside my bedroom door.

My name was written on it.

“Maya.””

My voice shook.

“What is it?””

Marcus picked it up carefully.

Evelyn looked nervous.

“Don’t open it yet.””

But Marcus already saw something.

A handwriting style.

A name.

He turned the box over.

There was a note attached.

His face changed.

“What?””

He handed it to Evelyn.

She read it.

Then whispered:

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“The person who sent this…”

A pause.

“Is the person your wife was trying to protect you from.””

The lights flickered.

May you like

And inside the box…

Something moved.
