Chapter 3: The Name Hidden in the Envelope

Marcus didn’t answer the phone right away.

He just stared at the screen.

The name glowing on it seemed impossible.

I watched his face carefully.

My dad was always the person who knew what to do.

When my bike broke, he fixed it.

When I got scared during storms, he sat beside me until morning.

When I cried, he always knew what to say.

But now he looked lost.

“Dad?””

He looked down at me.

“Stay close.””

That was all he said.

Then he answered.

“Hello?””

I couldn’t hear the voice on the other side.

But I saw the way his shoulders changed.

The way his hand tightened around mine.

“Yes,” he said.

A pause.

“No, I’m with Maya.””

Another pause.

His eyes moved toward Vanessa, who had just walked out of the boutique.

She was watching him.

Watching the phone.

Watching me.

Marcus turned away.

“Are you sure?””

A long silence followed.

Then he said:

“Send me everything.””

He ended the call.

I looked up.

“Who was that?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Finally, he said:

“Someone who knew your mother.””

My heart skipped.

I didn’t remember much about my mom.

Only pieces.

Her perfume.

Her laugh.

The way she used to sing while cooking.

Marcus rarely talked about her because it made him sad.

“What did they want?””

He looked at the beige envelope.

Then at me.

“They said they found something.””

Before I could ask more, Vanessa walked closer.

Her heels clicked against the floor.

“You’re really going to believe a stranger over your wife?””

Marcus looked at her.

“I’m going to believe evidence.””

She laughed softly.

“You think I stole from a child?””

Marcus didn’t reply.

That silence hurt her more than words.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You don’t know what it’s like raising three children.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Maya.

“I know what it’s like protecting one.””

Her expression changed.

For the first time, she looked like she understood she had lost control.

But she wasn’t finished.

“I did everything for this family.””

Marcus pointed toward the bags behind her.

“For which family?””

She went quiet.

Jordan and Ava stood several feet away.

Their expensive clothes suddenly looked uncomfortable.

Ava looked at Maya.

“I didn’t know.””

Maya looked back.

She believed her.

Because Ava was just a kid.

But Vanessa wasn’t.

Marcus took out his phone.

“I need to see every transaction.””

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“Marcus.””

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“You told me Maya’s account had nothing left.””

She looked away.

“I was going to replace it.””

Maya’s stomach dropped.

Replace it.

That meant she knew.

She knew she had taken it.

Marcus heard it too.

“You just admitted it.””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“That’s not what I meant.””

But it was too late.

Marcus opened the envelope again.

A folded document slipped out.

He caught it.

The paper was old.

Older than the bank statement.

He unfolded it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

“What?””

I looked up.

“Dad?””

He didn’t respond.

He was staring at a name.

A name written beneath my mother’s signature.

Vanessa noticed.

And her face went completely pale.

“What did you find?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Why is your name on this?””

The air disappeared from the space between us.

Vanessa took one step back.

“I can explain.””

Marcus held the paper tighter.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“That’s what you’ve been doing for years.””

He looked at me.

Then at the document.

Then back at Vanessa.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Instead, she reached toward the paper.

But Marcus moved away.

And behind us, the boutique doors opened again.

Someone walked in.

Someone who had been looking for us.

Someone carrying a second envelope.

The person looked directly at Maya.

Then said:

“I’m sorry, Marcus.””

May you like

A pause.

“Your daughter needs to know what happened to the rest of her mother’s money.””
