Chapter 5: The Truth My Mother Left Behind
My father read the letter silently.
I watched every emotion cross his face.
Confusion.
Pain.
Anger.
Love.
All at once.
I wanted to ask him what it said.
But I was afraid.
Because every secret we had uncovered that day had hurt.
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
“Did Maya’s mother write this before she died?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Two weeks before the accident.””
The word accident felt heavy.
My mother’s accident.
The thing nobody talked about.
Marcus folded the letter carefully.
“Why didn’t I get this?””
Evelyn looked at Vanessa.
“Because it was removed from the file.””
Everyone looked at her.
Vanessa’s lips parted.
“That’s ridiculous.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Did you take my wife’s letter?””
“No.””
“Then why are you scared of what it says?””
She didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
I watched Vanessa.
The woman who had tucked me into bed.
The woman who used to tell me she loved me.
The woman who now looked like she was trapped.
Marcus opened the letter again.
“This is private.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Private?””
She looked around.
“You’re destroying our family.””
Marcus looked at me.
“No.””
His voice became cold.
“You did that when you hurt her.””
Then he read.
“Dear Maya…”
His voice softened.
“‘If you are reading this, I need you to know one thing first. None of this was ever your fault.’”
My eyes filled with tears.
My mother’s words.
After all these years.
I felt like I could almost hear her voice.
“‘You are loved more than you will ever understand. Your father will protect you. But if someone tells you that you are less important because you are younger, quieter, or easier to ignore, don’t believe them.’”
I looked down.
Because I had believed that.
For years.
Marcus stopped reading.
He took a breath.
Then continued.
“‘I created the trust fund because I wanted Maya to always have a safe future. The money was placed under strict protection because I was worried someone might try to access it.’”
Marcus looked up.
His eyes moved to Vanessa.
“She was worried.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“She didn’t mean me.””
Evelyn spoke quietly.
“She named you.””
Nobody moved.
The words landed like a stone.
Marcus looked at the letter again.
“Why?””
Evelyn answered.
“Because your wife’s sister warned her about Vanessa.””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“My sister?””
“Yes.””
Marcus looked confused.
“What sister?””
I looked between them.
I had never heard about this.
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“You don’t know anything.””
Evelyn nodded.
“That was the problem.””
She opened another document.
“Vanessa had a history of controlling family finances.””
“That’s not true.””
“You were removed from two previous accounts.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“You’re lying.””
Evelyn looked at Marcus.
“The pattern was always the same. She gained trust, gained access, then slowly redirected money.””
Marcus stared at Vanessa.
The woman he married.
The person he trusted.
I watched his face.
It looked like his heart was breaking.
Not because of the money.
Because of what it meant.
He had brought someone into our home.
Someone who made his daughter feel unwanted.
Vanessa suddenly pointed at Evelyn.
“You think you’re better than me?””
Evelyn looked surprised.
Vanessa laughed.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Sacrificed?””
Vanessa turned toward him.
“Yes.””
Her voice became louder.
“I took care of this family.””
Marcus looked at Maya.
“No. You took from this family.””
She went silent.
Then her eyes moved to me.
For a second, I thought she looked sorry.
But then she said:
“You were never supposed to find that envelope.””
The room froze.
Marcus slowly looked at her.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa realized her mistake.
Too late.
She looked away.
Marcus stepped closer.
“You knew it existed.””
No response.
“You knew about the envelope.””
Silence.
Then Marcus asked the question everyone was afraid of.
“How long have you been hiding this from me?””
Vanessa’s face changed.
May you like
And she whispered:
“Since before you married me.””
