Chapter 1: The Envelope on the Table

“Why did you take my money?!””

The words exploded through the luxury apartment before anyone had time to pretend everything was still normal.

Jordan Carter had never screamed at Vanessa before.

Not once.

For fourteen years, he had been the quiet kid who swallowed his questions, lowered his voice when adults argued, and convinced himself that family meant giving people the benefit of the doubt.

But that afternoon, standing in the middle of the bright high-rise living room with a manila envelope crushed against his chest, he finally ran out of patience.

The city skyline stretched behind the floor-to-ceiling windows, sunlight spilling across the white sofa and polished glass table. Everything about the room looked expensive, peaceful, perfect.

Except Jordan’s hands were shaking.

He rushed forward and threw the envelope onto the table.

The papers inside slid slightly, revealing a corner of a bank statement.

Vanessa, sitting comfortably on the sofa in her elegant brown blouse, slowly looked up from her phone.

She didn’t look surprised.

That hurt Jordan more than anything.

“Jordan,” she said calmly, placing her phone down.

“What exactly are you accusing me of?””

Brielle, Vanessa’s daughter, stood near the window in her green dress. She had been checking something on her tablet moments before.

Now she was frozen.

Jordan stared at both of them.

“You know exactly what I’m accusing you of.””

Vanessa tilted her head.

“I think you’re being emotional.””

“Emotional?”” Jordan laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“You took money from my account.””

Brielle looked away.

That small movement made Jordan’s stomach tighten.

He noticed.

“You knew,” he whispered.

Brielle’s eyes snapped back to him.

“Knew what?””

“That something happened.””

“Jordan—”

“No.”” His voice cracked.

“Don’t do that. Don’t act like I’m crazy.””

Vanessa stood slowly, smoothing her blouse as if this was a minor inconvenience.

“Your father left that money sitting in an account. It wasn’t being used.””

Jordan’s face changed.

“It was for school.””

“It was just sitting there.””

“That was my education fund.””

Vanessa sighed.

“You’re fourteen. You don’t understand financial decisions.””

Jordan looked at her like he was seeing a stranger.

“You spent my future and you’re telling me I don’t understand?””

The room became painfully quiet.

Outside, cars moved like tiny dots beneath the glass.

Inside, Jordan could hear his own breathing.

Vanessa walked closer.

“Brielle had an opportunity.””

Jordan blinked.

“What?””

“She needed help.””

Jordan looked at Brielle.

“For what?””

Nobody answered.

His voice became sharper.

“For what?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Brielle needed it more.””

Jordan stared at her.

“For her vacation?””

The silence after that question was heavier than any argument.

Brielle’s face changed.

A flash of guilt.

A second of fear.

Then it disappeared.

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“Watch your attitude.””

“My attitude?”” Jordan pointed at the envelope.

“You moved thousands of dollars out of my account.””

“It wasn’t theft.””

“What do you call taking money that wasn’t yours?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“I call it helping family.””

Jordan shook his head.

“No. Family asks.””

The words landed.

For the first time, Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

But before she could respond, footsteps came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

Marcus Carter walked into the living room.

Jordan’s father stopped immediately.

He was still wearing his dark navy suit from work, his expression already serious before he understood what was happening.

“What vacation?””

Nobody moved.

Marcus looked from Jordan to Vanessa.

Then to the envelope on the table.

“Someone want to explain why my son looks like he just found out his family betrayed him?””

Jordan’s eyes filled with tears, but he refused to let them fall.

“Dad.””

Marcus walked toward him.

Jordan grabbed the envelope and handed it over.

“Check the withdrawals.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Jordan, what happened?””

“Just check.””

Something in his son’s voice made Marcus stop asking questions.

He opened the envelope.

The first page.

Then the second.

His jaw tightened.

Vanessa’s posture changed.

“Marcus,” she said softly, “this is being misunderstood.””

He didn’t answer.

He flipped through the documents.

The room felt smaller with every page.

Jordan watched his father’s face carefully.

He knew that expression.

It was the same one Marcus wore when he was protecting someone.

Marcus lifted his eyes.

And for the first time, Vanessa looked afraid.

But Jordan didn’t know the worst part yet.

May you like

Because the papers in his father’s hand were only the beginning.

And buried deeper inside that envelope was a name Jordan had never expected to see.
