Chapter 4: The Signature That Changed Everything

Marcus did not move.

The paper remained in his hand, held tightly enough that the edges began to bend.

Jordan watched his father’s face, searching for an answer.

But Marcus wasn’t looking at him.

He was looking at Vanessa.

That scared Jordan more than anything.

Because his father always looked at problems directly.

He always fixed things.

But now he looked like a man trying to understand how something impossible had happened.

“Dad,” Jordan whispered.

“Please.””

Marcus slowly lowered the document.

Not enough for Jordan to see.

Just enough to speak.

“Vanessa.””

Her lips parted.

“Marcus, listen—”

“No.””

His voice was controlled.

Almost too controlled.

“Before you say anything else, I want the truth.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“There are things you don’t understand.””

Marcus gave a quiet, bitter laugh.

“I understand enough.””

He placed the statement on the glass table.

Then he tapped the signature section.

“Someone approved these withdrawals.””

Jordan stepped closer.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked away.

That small movement answered more than words could.

Jordan felt his chest tighten.

“Who helped you?””

Brielle suddenly spoke.

“Jordan, please.””

He turned toward her.

“No. Everyone keeps saying please like I’m the one who did something wrong.””

Brielle looked hurt.

But Jordan couldn’t stop.

“My money disappeared.””

His voice cracked.

“My dad’s money for my future disappeared.””

Marcus looked at his son.

And for a moment, the anger in his face softened.

“Jordan.””

“I just want to know.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“I know.””

The room became quiet again.

Then Marcus picked up the statement.

“This signature is not random.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked at her.

“You know exactly what it means.””

She shook her head.

“No, I don’t.””

“You’re lying.””

The word landed hard.

Brielle looked at her mother.

“Mom?””

Vanessa ignored her.

Marcus continued.

“Only certain people were allowed access to this account.””

Jordan frowned.

“Who?””

Marcus hesitated.

That hesitation made Jordan nervous.

“Dad.””

Marcus looked at the document.

“Me.””

A pause.

“And Vanessa.””

Jordan looked at Vanessa.

“So you both could take money?””

“No,” Marcus said immediately.

“Not alone.””

He pointed at the signature line.

“Large withdrawals required approval from both account holders.””

Jordan’s face changed.

“Then…”

He looked between them.

“Someone copied a signature?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

“Then how?””

Nobody answered.

The silence felt impossible.

Vanessa suddenly walked toward the table.

“Give me that.””

Marcus moved the document away.

“No.””

“You’re accusing me without knowing the full story.””

“Then tell it.””

She froze.

For several seconds, Vanessa looked like she was deciding whether to fight or surrender.

Finally, she sat down.

The confident woman who had controlled the room minutes ago suddenly looked smaller.

“I was trying to help.””

Jordan stared.

“Help who?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Brielle whispered:

“Mom…”

Vanessa looked at her daughter.

That was the first time Jordan saw fear between them.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Marcus noticed too.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I made a mistake.””

Jordan shook his head.

“A mistake is forgetting a birthday.””

His voice trembled.

“A mistake is missing a meeting.””

He pointed at the papers.

“This was planned.””

Vanessa looked up.

“You think I wanted to hurt you?””

“I think you chose someone else over me.””

The words hit harder than shouting.

Brielle looked away.

Marcus closed his eyes briefly.

Then he opened them.

“Who benefited from these withdrawals?””

Vanessa stayed silent.

“Vanessa.””

Nothing.

Marcus leaned forward.

“Who?””

The apartment door suddenly unlocked.

Everyone turned.

The sound echoed through the living room.

Jordan’s body stiffened.

Nobody was supposed to come home.

Nobody was expected.

The door opened slowly.

A voice came from the hallway.

“Why does everyone look like someone died?””

Jordan froze.

He didn’t recognize the voice.

But Vanessa did.

Her entire face changed.

Marcus noticed immediately.

“Who is that?””

No one answered.

The footsteps came closer.

Then a shadow appeared at the entrance of the living room.

May you like

The person stopped when they saw the papers on the table.

And Vanessa whispered the name Jordan had never expected to hear.
