Chapter 6: The Secret They Buried

Jordan couldn’t hear anything for a few seconds.

The room was full of voices.

His father asking questions.

David explaining.

Vanessa trying to defend herself.

Brielle crying quietly.

But all Jordan heard was one sentence.

“She told me Jordan wasn’t supposed to find out.””

Not supposed to find out.

Like he was a stranger.

Like his own life was something adults could discuss behind closed doors.

Jordan looked at Vanessa.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

“Why wasn’t I supposed to know?””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“Jordan…”

“No.””

He stepped back.

“Don’t.””

His voice was smaller now.

Not angry.

Just hurt.

“You keep acting like this is about money.””

Marcus moved beside him.

“It’s okay.””

Jordan shook his head.

“No, Dad. It’s not.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“You decided things about me.””

Vanessa looked down.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Jordan laughed softly.

“Everyone says that after they hurt someone.””

The words broke something in the room.

Even Vanessa couldn’t argue.

Marcus opened the folder again.

He needed answers.

“What was the transfer for?””

Vanessa remained silent.

Marcus looked at David.

“You tell me.””

David nodded slowly.

“I received a call from Vanessa months ago.””

Jordan looked at him.

“About my account?””

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

David glanced at Vanessa.

She looked away.

“She said there was a family financial problem.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“And?””

“She said Jordan’s education account was vulnerable.””

Jordan frowned.

“Vulnerable?””

David nodded.

“She said someone might try to take the money.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Who?””

David hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

Jordan stared.

“You signed papers because you thought you were protecting me?””

David looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

“But you helped move my money.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than a lie.

Jordan turned away.

Marcus noticed.

“Jordan.””

“I need a minute.””

He walked toward the window.

The city stretched beneath him.

Thousands of people living normal lives.

Families laughing.

Parents protecting their children.

And here he was, standing inside a home where everyone had secrets.

Marcus stayed close.

But he didn’t interrupt.

After a moment, Jordan spoke quietly.

“Did you know?””

Marcus answered immediately.

“No.””

Jordan nodded.

“I believe you.””

That was the first peaceful moment they had shared all day.

But it didn’t last.

Because Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“I didn’t just move the money.””

Jordan slowly turned around.

His heart sank.

“What else?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I changed the account information.””

Marcus went still.

“What does that mean?””

“I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

She looked at Jordan.

And for the first time, she looked genuinely scared.

“Of losing control.””

Nobody spoke.

Jordan felt cold.

“Control?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I thought I could fix everything before you were old enough to understand.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You were planning this for years?””

“No.””

“Yes,” Jordan whispered.

He understood.

“You were waiting until I didn’t ask questions.””

Vanessa looked away.

That was enough.

Marcus closed the folder.

“Where are the original documents?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

She finally whispered:

“I don’t have them.””

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“Then who does?””

Another silence.

Jordan felt the familiar fear return.

Another secret.

Another person.

Another hidden piece.

David looked uncomfortable.

“I think I know.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Who?””

David looked at the folder in his hand.

Then at Vanessa.

“She wasn’t the only person involved.””

Jordan’s chest tightened.

“Who else?””

David hesitated.

Then his phone suddenly rang.

Everyone froze.

The sound echoed through the apartment.

David looked at the screen.

His face changed.

Marcus noticed.

“Who is calling?””

David didn’t answer.

The phone continued ringing.

Jordan watched him.

“Who?””

Slowly, David turned the phone around.

The name on the screen was visible.

And the moment Marcus saw it, all the color disappeared from his face.

Because the person calling was someone Jordan trusted.

May you like

Someone who had been in his life the entire time.

Someone who was never supposed to be part of the secret.
